a note from your director
Things are starting to ramp up as we move further into the spring semester! Let’s start with a celebration from this weekend before we get to what’s coming up!
What a way to officially start the Winter Guard Season!!! In their first competition of the season both our Johnson High School JV Winter Guard and our Johnson High School Varsity Winter Guard placed 1st and won their divisions at the Dripping Spring TCGC Contest this Saturday! I can’t begin to express how proud and amazed I am by these hard-working students!! I can’t wait to see how the season progresses!
This week is the final week for UIL Solo & Ensemble accompanist rehearsals! Please make sure everyone is ready to go and prepared to play their best!! Double-check the accompaniment schedules posted in the Band Hall and sent out through remind.
UIL Solo & Ensemble is happening this coming Saturday, February 5th, at Hays HS. Individual performance times will be distributed this week. Students need to arrive approximately thirty minutes before their performance time in order to locate their room, check in with the monitor and to warm up before their performance! Please dress nicely for this event, be professional and courteous to your judge and continue to represent our Jaguar Band with that same high standard you have always exhibited! We have loved getting to hear the students working on their solos these past few weeks and can’t wait to see the results of their hard work! Every time our students practice and improve as an individual musician it makes our entire band program even better!! Let’s continue working towards greatness!!
This week the Wind Ensemble starts its Monday evening practices from 4:30 - 6 p.m. Also, each Wind Ensemble section starts its weekly sectionals either before or after school. The students selected their sectional times as a section, and they are posted on the band calendar. Our limited rehearsal time is extremely valuable, so let’s be ready to go when your sectional begins! UIL Concert & Sight Reading will be here before you know it!
Can you say Hawaii????? Our required meeting, for anyone traveling with the band in March is scheduled for Tuesday, February 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the JHS Band Hall. We will also set up a zoom link for those who may need that format. During this meeting we will distribute a detailed itinerary, room lists, flight groups, flight numbers and additional information as provided by Perform America Texas. The excitement is building as we anticipate this incredible trip for our students and family!
Let’s have another great week, and as always: It’s A Great Day To Be A Jaguar!

We need your help!
We need your help in hosting the Texas Color Guard Circuit (TCGC) on March 19th!
As many of you will recall, this competition is very well-attended and provides us with not only an opportunity to showcase our program to the entire area (our competition date is the Class A Championship and Area Finals) but an opportunity to raise funds for the band and guard program! Last year we raised $7,900, and that was a COVID year!
This year, the competition will allow for students to stay and watch other guards, and there will be award retreats at the end of classifications! (That should be good for concession sales!)
In order to start seeking donations and planning, we will be hosting an organizational meeting.
Tuesday, February 1, 2022
6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
Johnson Band Hall
We plan to start in one large meeting and then breaking out into separate groups by the following tasks.
Concessions
Judges meals
Staff meals
We will try our best to coordinate a Zoom option. We just have to figure out how to facilitate the breakout room portion!
If you are willing to assist in hosting this important event, please contact Ida Musgrove at president@johnsonbands.com, or just show up on Tuesday!
Thanks in advance!

Guard parents, we need your help! Please sign up below to volunteer during the Winterguard season. Thanks in advance for playing your part in their success!
Now that we have our first competition under our belt, we have increased the number of volunteers we need to get the JV and Varsity shows on the floor. We now need 20! Of those 20, we need 10 to get JV on the floor. Please sign up for the future competition dates!

Washing JV Uniforms
We need JV PARENTS to help with washing JV uniforms! Once you sign up, you will be assigned to a set of uniforms and provided with the directions on what to do. Team Moms will be reaching out via the GroupMe for volunteers or please reach out to uniforms@johnsonbands.com if you are willing to volunteer! And just like during marching season, uniforms can be washed at home or at the school!
REMEMBER: All Volunteers will receive a wristband for the competition. This wristband will allow you to watch our groups from the front audience area, however, for other groups it will only allow you to sit in the back bleachers with guard members.

Watch Rehearsals!
Please remember that you are welcome to come in and watch the end of winter guard practices. You can either come in during the last 15 minutes of practice (when they usually do a run-through) or come in earlier and see if there is anything that needs to be done! We always have things that need to be done and truly appreciate parents coming in and lending a helping hand!
TEAM MOMS
There is a lot to do to support our winter guard! In order to better coordinate all of the areas needed to supporting our guard's success, we now have TEAM MOMS! You can also find information about Private Lessons on the band website at https://www.johnsonbands.com/color-guard. Look for the Vegas Gold boxes.
Winterguard Fees: $200
This fee covers costs such as unitards, inventory for shoe and glove replacements, competition entries, prop supplies, design and production services, and shared cost of contributing towards production of show, including cost of floors, props and costumes.
Please note that we are able to keep these costs low by 1) contribution from boosters towards costumes and props; and 2) the small amount of funds provided by the district to the overall “band” program. (FYI each color guard costume, whether it be marching band or winter guard, costs on average $200).
You can pay your Winterguard Fee on the band website at https://www.johnsonbands.com/all-products
- If you would like to make arrangements for payments or seek assistance with costs, please feel free to contact Ida Musgrove at president@johnsonbands.com. We do not want costs to prevent any student from participating in guard!
we've moved to google calendar!
