Math Updates
In Math this week, we started off using rulers to measure to the nearest 1/4 inch. We compared the ruler to a number line and marked 1 whole, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 inches. Then we moved into developing strategies for solving extended multiplication and division facts. We identified related multiplication facts to help solve division facts. We then solved a number story involving extended facts and shared our strategies for solving the story.
After that, we wrote missing factors for number sentences and found ways to package 16 bottles without leftovers. We found factors by using a factor rainbow. Ask your child to show you a factor rainbow at home. We loved this activity!
Finally, we ended the week by using clues to make conjectures and arguments about the total number of chairs in a room. The next day, we discussed some conjectures and arguments and then the student were able to revise their work.

Building a READING LIFE
In Reading this week, we learned that readers can think comparatively across books that go together in some way. They think about how the main characters are similar-the ways they behave, the things they say, as well as what they care about. They also think about how the characters are different. We also learned that one important way readers compare characters in two books is to notice and name the kinds of problems each one has and the ways in which they react to these. Finally, we learned that readers can develop debatable ideas about characters across books by exploring a big question with no one "right" answer. They can use mini-arguments to share their ideas, supporting these with evidence from the text.
We began a new book called Dyamonde Daniel. We will examine her journey and see how she has a lot in common with Opal from Because of Winn Dixie. Dyamonde will also be very different in some ways too! We can't wait to find out more about her.

Word Study
New word study lists on Monday, April 1st with the test on the 5th.
Monday nights- Students are to sort their words and record them in their notebooks. They are to also record their discovery or rule for the week.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights- Students should sort their words and read them as they sort. They can practice writing them on paper, whiteboards, or typing them. NO WRITTEN homework is required on these nights.
Thursday nights- Students are to ask an adult to quiz them on their words. They write the headers and then record the words as they are called out. The adult should use the notebook to correct the sort and ask the student to practice any words that were spelled incorrectly. This can be done on the back of the homework sheet. This paper should then be returned to school Friday morning.
Friday- there will be a test given
Writing long & strong
This week in Writing, we learned that writers don't wait until they finish writing to edit. As they write, they consider their audience and take time to spell what they know by heart correctly to make sure their pieces are clear. We also learned, that whenever writers want to get better at something, it help to pause, self-assess their writing, and make plans for future work. Finally, we learned that writers collect evidence for their opinions first by gathering all they know about their topic and then by planning for their research. We then discussed all of the important people at North Coventry and students brainstormed the most important to them. They worked with partners to give reasons why those people are important. They will be writing their persuasive piece on this person for the rest of this unit. We are excited to get started!
