Letter from Administration
Dear Parents:
The W.C. Petty Elementary School staff regards the placement of students into classroom groups to be a very important professional responsibility. Our goal is to make the best possible decision, not only for an individual child, but also for groups of children. We are committed to developing classroom combinations which are balanced with regard to strengths and needs. We strongly believe that all classes should reflect this balance. It is our belief that such classes maximize learning opportunities and are in the best interest of children and teachers. We are professionally committed to creating heterogeneous classes for each grade level.
The staff at Petty will work together to make the best possible educational decision about each child's placement for the 2021/2022 school year. We thoroughly consider the following variables to arrive at a decision for individual children and to achieve a balanced grouping for each classroom:
- Academic achievement
- Work habits & study skills
- Behavior
- Social needs
- Placement history
- Teaching style of teachers & learning style of students
- Gender
Please do not request a teacher by name. While we encourage parental input about each of the above variables, parent requests for specific teachers can be problematic. The best information you can provide to assist in our placement of students is a description of your child, rather than a focus on the teacher. Please remember that we value your input , and it will be carefully considered in class placement; however, we do have an obligation to create educationally balanced classes based on the above criteria.
If you would like to provide some input about your child for consideration as teachers build classes for next year, please complete the attached STUDENT PLACEMENT SURVEY and return it to the school no later than Tuesday, April 27th. All information received by April 27th will be given serious consideration if based upon on the above guidelines.
Respectfully,
Joanna Gerritsen
W.C. Petty Elementary Principal
Dismissal/Student Pick-Up
In order to keep the dismissal process quick and safe, please adhere to the following suggestions:
- Please make sure to have the school-provided sign visible to the dismissal supervisors until your child is seated in your car.
- If you need additional time to buckle in your child, please pull forward to allow for other cars to proceed through the dismissal process.
- If you need a new sign for parent pick-up, please call the office (847-838-8101) or let your child's teacher know.
Information from D34 Student Services
Lake County Federal Emergency Rental Assistance Program
Lake County renters who face financial hardship related to COVID-19 may apply for the new Lake County Federal Emergency Rental Assistance (FERA) Program, which provides help for individuals paying rent and/or utility bills. Eligible households may receive up to 12 months of past due rent and up to three months of assistance with future rent, but no more than 12 months of assistance total. Payments from the program will be made directly to landlords and/or utility companies.
To qualify for help, residents must:
Pay rent in Lake County
Have a COVID-related financial hardship
Be at risk of homelessness or housing instability
Meet income guidelines based on household size
Provide appropriate documentation
Examples of COVID-related financial hardship include job loss or furlough, reduced hours and income in order to care for a child, significant costs due to COVID-19 such as medical bills, and other circumstances.
Examples of what counts as being at risk of homelessness or housing instability include having a past due rent or utility bill, receiving an eviction notice, having had to move in temporarily with another household because you couldn't afford your rent, spending a high proportion of your income on housing costs and more.
To learn more about who is eligible, and for a link to the application, visit lakecountyil.gov/renthelp.
If you have questions or need help filling out the application, including questions about what documents you need, please call 211 from anywhere in Lake County or text your zip code to 898211 to get connected to someone who can help.
Snack Policy from the D34 Family Handbook
Student health and wellness is dependent upon good nutritional choices for all students throughout the school day. The prevention of allergic reactions and the reduction of childhood obesity are factors contributing to healthy and allergy safe snack options. (While it is recognized that there can be no guarantee of total allergy free environments within the school setting, the term “allergy safer” implies efforts to reduce the potential for allergic reactions.) All classrooms throughout the District will be nut free classrooms in order to provide allergy safer learning environments for all students. Students participate in educational activities in various classrooms during the school day due to flexible grouping, changing class periods at the middle school, and specials such as music or PE; therefore, all classrooms must provide, to the extent reasonably possible, an allergy safe learning environment.
Only fresh fruits and vegetables will be allowed as snacks during the school day. Dips and dressings are not permitted. Individual schools or classrooms may employ additional restrictions or guidelines for school snacks as needed. Please see your school’s specific webpage for details
Please send your child with a refillable water bottle everyday!
SELF-CERTIFICATION SLIPS
Reminder: In-person students will need to bring a self-certification ticket EVERY DAY. These tickets are collected and checked daily. We appreciate your partnership in helping to ensure the safety of our Petty community and all its members.
