Marlette Elementary News
November 2019
From the Principal's Desk
November is the month to remind us to be thankful for the many positive things happening in our lives. I am thankful for my terrific family, an encouraging church, excellent teachers and support staff, supportive parents who partner with us to ensure every child's success, and students who try their hardest every day and always give 100%. I am also thankful to live in a community as great as Marlette! We may not be perfect, but we are working to improve every day. Speaking of improvement, we would greatly appreciate you taking some time to complete our annual parent survey- https://forms.gle/e9JXFKTK9V2BQNkQ7.
Schedule
I sent a schoolwide voice message last week informing our families that our daily schedule was going to change. We tried a new schedule this year that should have allowed all classes to experience all exploratory classes (band/music, gym, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math), and art). The year started off well, but we quickly realized that not all classes were able to experience all rotations due to sharing staff with the high school and the additional requirements of some staff being federally funded (Title I). We also found that our students with the most need were not receiving enough support due to the rotating exploratory schedule and unaligned daily grade level schedules. The decision was made to revert to our previous non-rotating schedule on the first day of our second quarter, Monday, November 4. This schedule allows our paraprofessionals daily, consistent schedules in classrooms, provides our special education teachers with consistent grade level schedules, and allows us to maximize our time with shared exploratory teachers. However, due to exploratory times staying the same daily, students will have less variety in their exploratory courses. The following list shows what each grade level now has for exploratory:
Young 5’s and Kindergarten- Art, STEAM, Gym
First Grade- Art, STEAM, Gym
Second Grade- STEAM, Gym
Third Grade- Music, STEAM, Gym
Fourth Grade- Art, STEAM, Gym
Fifth Grade- Band, STEAM, Gym
Sixth Grade- Band, STEAM, Gym
We are working on creating a master schedule for the 2020-2021 school year that allows us to provide students with a greater variety of exploratory classes, but maintain fidelity of providing additional support for both teachers and students. If you have questions or concerns, please let me know.
