Falco December 14th - 18th
2020 Newsletter for Five Oaks and Rachel Carson MS
A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Hi Falcon Families!
Happy Spirit Week Falcons!
There are so many great events this week; spirit week all week long, the Winter Fly-Thru Canned Food Drive and Supply Swap on Wednesday, PTO meeting Thursday, and the Talent Show on Friday! It’s an exciting week and our teachers and staff are working hard to ensure students have every opportunity to engage and learn at the same time.
While the fly-thru will take place behind the building, my hope is that you all can take some time to visit the front of the building as well. We are partnering with the Five Oaks Museum (formerly the Washington County Museum) to install a “Museum at your place” exhibition. There are 10 signs in the front side of the building that each say “This is Kalapuyan land” on one side and on the other side have an image of a significant picture, artifact, or art piece. Each sign has a QR code that you can scan using the camera on your phone. You will see a link pop up to learn about the image and the significance to the indigenous cultures in our area. We are very excited about this installation and the community learning and also that while we’re not open as usual, we can still have a way to connect! If you go visit, please send us some pictures! We’d love to hear your experience with the project!
While we do our best to give and demonstrate joy, we also know that this year is different and in many ways more challenging for everyone. Whether the challenges are related to needs like food, rent, utilities, housing, or to sadness, grief, loss, or loss of hope, we have resources to help and connect you. We do not want anyone to go without or to struggle with mental health needs. Unfortunately in this remote environment, it can be more challenging for us to be able to identify needs and reach out. If you need assistance of any sort, please reach out and let us know.
This will be our last newsletter until after Winter Break. I wish you all joy and happiness over the break. I hope you have an opportunity to celebrate in whatever way your family celebrates and hope that this will be a few weeks of rest, fun, and reflection. See you in 2021!

Important Attendance Note: Students may not call in their absences on the attendance line, it must be the parent or guardian. Same with email, the student can notify the teacher that they will be missing a class, but the parent/guardian must call the attendance line 503-356-2601 to notify attendance of the excused absence.
Unlike last spring, student attendance will count during Comprehensive Distance Learning. Please read the following guidance on how attendance will be tracked:
Teachers will take student attendance daily. Attendance may be counted in a variety of ways to accommodate families who may need to access instruction during different times of the day.
Attending a live teacher-led session
Watching a teacher-recorded video
Interacting with a teacher via email
Posting completed coursework online
Parent/guardian notifications will be sent out at approximately 5 p.m. each day if students haven’t engaged in their school work and have been marked as absent.
Each morning, teachers will access an attendance report and will reconcile any absences from the previous day with any new evidence of engagement during the evening.
Please call the attendance line at 503-356-2601 if your student will be missing school due to illness or medical appointments.
