Our Path Note Topic
School boards actually have very few major responsibilities to fulfill. Boards have to hire superintendents and approve personnel hiring/firing recommendations, develop policy, and approve an annual balanced budget. The latter is probably one of the most difficult tasks.
As employee costs, equipments, maintenance of facilities, transportation, educational services, and so many other resouce costs continue to rise, school boards have to weigh the expenses and the possibility of raising taxes on the district's communities. Again, probably one of the most difficult tasks.
This year, many district folks and community members believe that the schools have so much money from the ESSERS and other stimulus funds allocated by the federal government that the budget should not be an issue. Unfortunately, that is not the case.
Although the funds are of a great help to meet some expenses, they are still very restrictive in use. The rules for the various grants have restrictions and guidelines that must be followed. With that said, there are still expenses that will need covered for the next school year. At that point, the school board must determine whether to make cuts to expenses and/or raise taxes on the community.
The budget process will continue through June of 2022 for the 22/23 budget. The preliminary final budget must be approved by the end of May, so the final budget can be approved and submitted to PDE no later than June 30th. Ironically, the school district budget depends on the state's subsidy for the next year. However, the state legislature's budget process can go on and on. Unfortunately, schools are at a disadvantage trying to guess what its subsidy will be for the following year.
As WASD school directors go through this process, please keep in mind that they are being asked to make extremely difficult and challenging decisions that both impact our students and the community.

This Week's Piece of the Puzzle is Wyatt Dietrich. Besides helping his students achieve their academic potential, Wyatt also gives extra personal attention to his students in many ways.
Wyatt celebrates all of his students' birthdays by bringing in cupcakes or a birthday cake to celebrate. He also made a Christmas gift for each of his students this school year. Wyatt goes above and beyond for his students!

Challenge Answer
In 1918 the US adopted daylight savings time or “Fast Time” as it was called during WWI to help save energy but it was repealed 7 months later. It was brought back in the height of WWII when it was called “War Time” and was used continuously from February 9, 1942 to September 30, 1945.
