Exciting Happenings Ahead!
We are also one week into our canned food drive and off to a great start with many items brought in. It's not to late to donate! See below for a list of needed items.
If you follow me on Twitter you may have seen some beautiful pictures from recess. The gorgeous sun and moderate fall temperatures have made recess fantastic! We are looking for additional items for outside if you have any new or gently used footballs, soccer balls, Frisbees, hula hoops or jump ropes we would happily give them a new home. I will send out a sign up genius next week.
I also want to let you know about something I just found about this week - our teachers have voicemail accounts! As our teachers don;t have phones in the room, many of us had assumed that there was no way to leave a voicemail message - you would leave a message with our secretary. What we did not realize was that their are extensions listed on the Coakley page of the NPS website that are linked to our teacher's email accounts. Teachers that had been hired within the past 2-3 years were unaware and some of their emails had not been linked. All of this has been fixed and teachers will now receive an email alter when they receive a voicemail. I note this in case any parents had left voicemail messages for teachers that were not returned - it may be that they never received them. I may be in my third year, but I am still learning new things every day!
Coming up this week is our fall open house. On Tuesday, September 24th, your child will come home with a schedule for you to follow. Some teams do group presentations while others have you travel class to class. All will allow for a chance to glimpse at the places where your child spends their day. Open House will begin with a short presentation at 5:45 about our new CMS PRIDE program in the auditorium followed by your child's schedule. A reminder that this is a time to hear about curriculum and programs and meet your teachers but is not a conference about your child. We hold parent teacher conferences in November and your child's guidance counselor will gladly set up a team meeting prior to that if you feel it is necessary.
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! Enjoy these last few beautiful weekend days!

School Council
The Coakley Middle School Council consists of parents, staff, students, and community members. The responsibilities of the Council are as follows:
Adopting educational goals for the school that are consistent with local educational policies and statewide student performance standards.
Identifying the educational needs of Coakley Middle School students.
Reviewing the annual Coakley Middle School budget.
Review and formulate the school improvement plan.
The council meets approximately once per month alternating on Wednesday afternoons from 2:30-3:30 pm and on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-6:30 pm (a schedule will be issued at the first meeting). In addition to attending the monthly meetings, members also work on reviewing, formulating, and implementing action plans during the school year and creating a school improvement plan that is presented to the School Committee.
The Coakley Middle School will elect parent representatives to the Council in September. If you would like your name to be placed in nomination for a parent position, please complete the form below and return it to my attention by September 20, 2019 in an envelope addressed “School Council Parent Nomination”. The first meeting is tentatively scheduled for October 2, 2019. Please feel free to call or email for additional information.
Norwood World Cup
Nurse's Corner
Welcome back! It is wonderful to see all the students in school. If your child has an epipen, asthma inhaler, or any other medication needed in school please make sure that we have 1) the medication, 2) parent/guardian authorization signature, 3) doctor's orders. Please contact Ms. Sperber or Ms. Kozol at 781-440-5926 with any questions.
Attention 7th grade parents:
By Massachusetts law, all seventh graders must have an updated physical (dated on or after 9/1/2018) and be up to date on all immunizations, including the adolescent Tdap (tetanus/diphtheria/pertussus) immunization, usually given at the 11 or 12 year old appointment. If you have not yet sent in the updated physical for your child, please do so ASAP.
Attention 6th grade parents:
Sixth grade is the final year for the Norwood School Dental Clinic. Dr. Stone will be in our school on Sept. 16 and 18. Opt-out forms were sent home last week. All students who do not bring in an opt-out form will be seen by Dr. Stone. If you have any questions about this program, please give Ms. Sperber or Ms. Kozol a call at 781-440-5926.
Looking ahead to next year: Sixth grade parents should be aware that all seventh grade students will be required by law to have an updated physical (dated on or after 9/1/2019), and updated immunizations including the adolescent Tdap and the adolescent meningococcal MCV4 (menACWY) immunization. While the CDC has been recommending this immunization for many years, the 2020-21 school year will be the first year that Massachusetts requires this immunization for school attendance. As you bring your children in for their physicals throughout this year, please make sure that they receive both immunizations (and HPV as well, though not required for school), and you can then send in the physical form to us at that time and they will be set for next year. Thank you!

You can also stay up to date with the CMS PTO by following us on Facebook. You can contact the PTO at coakleypto@gmail.com.
Dues Letters will be coming home this week! If every family donates $20 it would raise over $10,000 for CMS. All PTO money is used for student events and activities. Dues forms are also attached to this newsletter!
