Message from Superintendent Mueller
Good afternoon,
Thank you for continuing to share in supporting the safety of our CUSD community during the dynamic nature of the pandemic.
Some important information regarding our current district timeline for a return to on-campus experiences:
Reopening Timeline:
We continue to adapt and respond to the ever-changing conditions of state and county requirements. New CA Department of Public Health Reopening Guidelines were released yesterday. We remain optimistic that our target return date to provide on-campus instruction will be Monday, February 1, the first day of second semester.
Silver Strand and Village Elementary Students who elect to engage in on-campus experiences will begin the second semester with their existing AM or PM cohort, schedule, and teacher. For those students who opted for BRIDGE placement, services and supports will not change. Parents who requested a change in placement will be notified by site administration on cohort, schedule, and teacher assignment during the week of Monday, January 25.
Coronado Middle and Coronado High School are preparing for the transition to Hybrid learning for students that will be returning to campus (link to draft schedules above). In this model, cohorts of students will be physically on campus two days a week while the other cohorts access instruction from home via Concurrent Curriculum Delivery (CCD) or livestreaming. Site administrators will confirm scheduling and details for students that have opted for Hybrid. For those students who opted for BRIDGE learning, services and supports will not change.
Rapid Antigen COVID Testing in CUSD
Yesterday, Coronado Unified School District initiated a rapid COVID-19 antigen testing program for all school personnel. CUSD is only one of two districts in the state selected to participate in the pilot program, sponsored by and in partnership with the California and San Diego County Departments of Public Health, to bring rapid tests to schools, pharmacies, and workplaces which require frequent and affordable testing. Over 190 staff members were tested yesterday as part of this pilot program and it has already proved to be fruitful. Our ability to identify positive cases and immediately initiate contact tracing is critical to our reopening. Additional information on the pilot program can be found here.
Recording of Instruction
Teaching and learning in a virtual environment poses challenges for our staff and our students. Please be aware and mindful of legislation regarding recording a teacher without his/her consent. Per California Educational Code 51512, a parent or student recording classroom instruction, without prior consent of the teacher and site principal, is prohibited. Anyone who willfully violates this section is subject to discipline and/or misdemeanor. Thank you for respecting and honoring our professional educators by adhering to this legislation.
We appreciate your grace and understanding as we navigate through these challenging times together. Our commitment to connect, challenge, and champion every child, every day will not waiver.
Respectfully,
Karl J. Mueller

CUSD Grab & Go Meal Service Goes Universal Through 2020
Meal distribution will continue every Monday while students are in a distance learning environment. The USDA has now approved universal feeding for all children between the ages of 1-18 years through June 2021 as long as the district is in a distance learning environment. They have recognized the need for this around the country and have decided to move forward with it. All children will get free meals regardless of meal status (free/reduced/paid). Children are not required to be students of the Coronado Unified School District.
All families with children 18 and under will be able to pick up free breakfast and lunch meals via curb-side pick-up. Each child will receive one bag that contains 7 days’ worth of meals for breakfast and lunch. Meals may consist of packaged, refrigerated, and/or frozen items (heating instructions will be provided). District and school staff will start "Grab and Go Distribution" of meal bags at 3:30 PM, and will stop once all bags are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
All meals will be distributed curb-side to decrease the risk of exposure. Bags will be placed into automobile trunks-they will not be handed through the vehicle window for the protection of both our staff and vehicle occupants. Only those in cars will be served meals during this pick-up window, no walk-ups or bicycles are allowed in order to maintain social distancing protocols. If you are unable to pick-up meals by car or during the scheduled distribution time, please email Charity.Campbell@coronadousd.net on Mondays before 2:00 PM and we will schedule an alternative window to pick-up a meal.
Meals may not be distributed to students. Students who are receiving meals are encouraged to be physically present at the time of pick-up. Additionally, adults may pick up meals for students not present by printing and submitting this form at the time of pick-up. No meals will be distributed to parents/guardians without a child present or a form submitted at time of pick up due to state regulations.
Meals are available for all children aged 18 and under. Children are not required to be students of the Coronado Unified School District. Our incredible Child Nutrition Service team members and volunteers have served over 225,000 meals since this program began. We are prepared to serve meals weekly to over 830 children (11,620 meals in total). As demands increase, we will continue to increase the number of meals we prepare in order to accommodate the needs of our entire school community. This is free for all children, regardless of meal status - please spread the word!
Daily lunch meals, free of charge, for those students who need them. Pre-order, one week in advance from Charity Campbell, Director of Child Nutrition Services. For more information or questions, please email: charity.campbell@coronadousd.net.
Caught Being Awesome!
As our educators, parents, and community come together to connect, challenge, and champion our students during our district closure, we are humbled by the outpouring of compliments during these trying times. What a positive testament to our CUSD family!
Katie Leontieff goes above and beyond to support our special education staff and students each day. She is supportive, compassionate, and works tirelessly to help others! She makes the team feel heard and appreciated every day! She always checks in and assists us, even with her busy schedule. She truly keeps our team afloat and we are so grateful for her!
Dr. Barbara Wolf, tireless CoSA MTD Director, thought outside of the box during unprecedented times to find a way to have the fall musical both remotely and safely (all rehearsals on zoom, taping with masked crew while kids lip-syncing to their own pre-recorded vocals for safety etc). Barbara, undeterred by a pandemic, had the kids rehearse on zoom with choreography, especially entertaining with parents sometimes in the next room. The impact to the MTD class, especially the seniors, in having the fall musical while many schools have just cancelled everything outside of academics has been incredibly positive for our kids mental health and anxiety. Thank you Dr. Barbara Wolf for being incredibly Awesome!!
Every time Ken Heskestad meets with his students on zoom he brings joy and happiness. He is always enthusiastic, upbeat, and supportive. He takes the time to talk with each one of the students to find out about their particular art creation and gives them comments like "that is fantastic! I love it!" and "That sounds like a great idea - go for it!" He is a ball of energy and really makes his students WANT to come to class. He is making the best of this distance learning situation and giving his students an opportunity of a lifetime with exploring all genres of the art world. He is truly amazing.
Multiple parents, students, and staff recognizing staff for their support, guidance, and going above and beyond for our CUSD family: Jennifer Rogale, Heather Springfield, Traci Orth, Lindsay Goldman, David McBean, Beth Connelly, Marshall Redding, M&O Grounds Maintenance Team, and Jenny Moore.
Click here to recognize an employee or volunteer who goes above and beyond to make a difference. Those who are "caught" will receive a copy of the positive words that were shared about them and a "Caught Being Awesome" decal. Please take a minute or two to brighten someone else's day!
