Who Should Attend:
Middle and high school science teachers; STEM and STEAM directors, coaches, and coordinators
About the Workshop:
Student STEM projects offer rich opportunities for hands-on learning and inquiry, but launching and coaching authentic research can be a daunting process. In this round table workshop, we’ll examine essential strategies for identifying and mapping student research topics, finding mentors and materials, designing experiments, and using logbooks. We will examine final research papers—from literature reviews, style, and format to abstracts and academic honesty. We will also discuss science fairs and other options for sharing research outcomes. Participants will have the opportunity to share their own experiences, while learning from others about best practices for coaching student research in their classes and schools. The workshop will include a detailed packet of materials and handouts to share with students and colleagues.
Outcomes:
- Help students to find and refine authentic research topics
- Use grade appropriate literature for background scientific information
- Find mentors and materials to support student research
- Coach students in designing authentic, controlled experiments
- Guide students in using logbooks and writing STEM research papers
- Organize a science fair and/or mentor student entries into other STEM competitions
