Announcements
Parent Teacher Conferences will be held this week Tuesday, October 1st and Thursday October 3rd and then next week, Wednesday October 9th. We sent home appointment reminders with each student on Friday. (I had them staple it to their planner, so check there if you haven't seen it!) As a reminder these are student led conferences and we only have a short time (10 minutes) with each parent so please be on time. If you need to reschedule please email Mrs. Patterson. All conferences will be in room 402 (Mrs. Patterson's room.) Encore teachers are available for drop in visits on those nights as well.
Students need to bring in a stamped business size envelope by Wednesday, October 2nd. This is for a collaborative project with ELA and SS; we will be writing to national parks requesting material to help us with our research.
Open gym for boys basketball is cancelled on Monday September 30th. The next open gym is Wednesday October 2nd
Make-up pictures will be held next Wednesday, October 2nd. These are only for students that did not have their picture taken at registration. This is NOT retakes. Forms are available in the Main Office.
Book Fair will be this week. The Fair will be open both nights of parent-teacher conferences and students will have an opportunity to visit the fair during ELA class on Wednesday!
Retake Policy: As a reminder, unit tests have the opportunity for retakes within 2 weeks of the graded test being handed back to the student. Retakes are always on Wednesdays after school and a retake form must be completed by the student and signed by a parent before arrangements for a retake are made. Small daily quizzes or tests or quizzes where the option of using notes was given are not to be retaken.
Thank you for the Kleenex boxes that have been donated - we appreciate it and could still use many more boxes!
CORE Classes
English Language Arts (ELA)
Many students have been finishing books and have had their reading log signed off on... very exciting and encouraging to see motivated students at work every day! Keep it up!

Math
In math we have been working with the concept of fractions and percentages. Converting fractions into percentages and percentages into fractions. This concept can prove to be challenging and we are working hard to make sense of it. The idea that a percent is that same as saying “per 100” seems to help.
In Mr. Anwander's classroom he is putting together a bulletin board that has pictures of the students doing something that they enjoy outside of school. Sports, music, or any other activity they enjoy. He would appreciate the students bringing him a picture that he can keep of them to put on the board.
Science
In science we are continuing our Energy theme, but have moved on to types and forms of energy. Potential and Kinetic are types of energy that can be further explained as forms of energy such as mechanical, sound, chemical, electrical… We have an in class project next week that we will be working on to create a solar oven that will hopefully capture enough energy from the Sun to make a s’more. Students will work in groups, but will need to gather enough materials between them to build their project.
