Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: Ellen Ochoa
Ellen Ochoa made her mark by becoming the first Hispanic American woman to go to space with a nine-day mission in 1993.
Ochoa was born in 1958 in Los Angeles, California, years after her paternal grandparents immigrated from Mexico. She first obtained her physics degree from San Diego State University and later her masters and doctorate from Stanford University’s department of electrical engineering by 1985.
Through her impressive research work, NASA selected Ochoa in 1991 and she became an astronaut in July of that year. Two years later, Ochoa made history on board the Space Shuttle Discovery on a mission to study the Earth’s ozone layer. She later completed three more missions.

The Raptor Report
Please send these to celotton@casdschools.org with the title Raptor Report. We look forward to seeing students' learning spaces, class and outside activities, class projects, etc.
Phonics with Mrs. Cooper
Mrs. Cooper's second graders have been so busy working on their phonics! They investigated how the letter "r" changes vowel sounds and can be very tricky sometimes! To celebrate the end of the unit, the class did a directed drawing of a scarecrow together on Zoom (scarecrow has a tricky "r" sound)! They turned out great!
Mrs. Fleck's Kindergarten Students Enjoy Counting (and Eating) Apples
Ms. Fleck's Kindergarten Class enjoyed eating an apple on Friday while she read the story "Ten Red Apples". The boys and girls gave a thumbs up that the apples were hard on the outside, crunchy and DELICIOUS! Some of the children had a container of apple sauce that they enjoyed too! Happy Fall!
Mrs. March's Third Graders Build a Reading Life
The third graders in Ms. March's class have finished up their first reading unit "Building a Reading Life." The students learned to find a comfortable spot, gather all their reading materials, and they then learned strategies to help them become better readers. The students listened and read the book Indian Shoes while they worked through the unit. We are now listening to the story Stone Fox and are enjoying comparing the stories and putting their reading strategies to work. So far, the students have read over 125 books on their online GET EPIC accounts. They also spent time learning how to figure out "hard" words using the various context clue strategies.
The Grinwis Children Settle into School and Fall
Pictures:
Meredith sits at the new desk her dad made for her, so she had her own learning space in her bedroom. She loves being in her sunny corner and having some independence.
Henry's workstation that his parents put together is complete with family photos and pizza lights! His best buddy, Squishy Monkey, is always nearby.
Outside of school, the family enjoys getting all decorated, inside and out, for Halloween and visiting their favorite place - Longwood Gardens.
Fifth Grade Students Conquer Area and Volume
The fifth grade students have been working to find the area of 2-D figures. They also found the volume of rectangular prisms (3-D figures, as pictured).

Parent-Teacher Association (PTA)
Becoming a PTA member allows you to vote and make important decisions on how we spend the money we raise, which directly impacts the school and your children. More than 30 years of research has shown that children do better when parents are involved at home and at school-students grades are higher, test scores rise, self-esteem grows, and schools improve.

21st Century After School Program
Hello Reeceville Elementary Families!!!!
My name Ms.Claudette, and I am the Program Coordinator with the 21st Century After School Program at Reeceville Elementary. This school year we would like to share some exciting news and tell you all about some new learning experiences that is going to be offered to your child(ren).
Like many schools throughout Chester County, classes are being offered remotely/virtually. Many teachers have begun to incorporate new tools and resources into their daily lessons. And students are experiencing new methods of learning which has an important, lasting impact on their educational experience. Throughout this transition, it has become very apparent that with the required physical distance between teachers and students, it is more important than ever to find ways to connect with students and keep them actively engaged, motivated and safe within the virtual learning experience.
I am excited to share with you that the 21st Century will be offering a virtual after school program. Our program will be operating Monday through Thursday. During this time your child will be provided with academic support that will assist with daily school assignments, extension activities and/or homework. Our program will also provide STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) and Social Emotional Learning Enrichment.
Our 21st Century teachers will also be utilizing the Matific, educational math program. This program has over 1,500 interactive and engaging math activities and lessons. It is one of the most effective ways to help children learn the fundamentals of mathematics. Implementing Matific is an EXCELLENT way to help boost “math confidence” within children, while turning screen time into learning time.
If you would like your child to participate in the 21st Century Virtual After School Program, please feel free to contact me:

I look forward to speaking with all of you and starting this new and exciting school year!!
