How to Use A Compass

Define Compass

A compass is an instrument for determining directions, as by means of a freely rotating magnetized needle that indicates magnetic north.

Why Do We Need A Compass

We need a compass to find our way to some where, like GPS but GPS tells you the exact location, and a compass just gives you directions like NE ,NW, SE, or SW

How to Use A Compass

1.Align the compass and find out which end of the needle points North.

2.Turn the compass until the north pointer is on the North.

3.Look at the numbers.(Another form of using a compass is Degrees)

4.Hold one hand out and place the compass of your palm and point North the direction you facing.

5.Turn the dial on the compass until the North facing arrow is aligned with the pointer

6.To find your bearing, place the map on the ground and find where you want to start and end. Place the compass so that it matches both points. Turn the dial until "north" points the same direction as the north indicator on the map. The index on the baseplate should now line up with the correct bearing on the dial. Turn the compass in the correct direction.

The magnetic compass is an old Chinese invention, probably first made in China during the Qin dynasty (221-206 B.C.). Chinese fortune tellers used lodestones (a mineral composed of an iron oxide which aligns itself in a north-south direction) to construct their fortune telling boards.
