The Kickemuit Middle School Library is a unique and essential part of our learning community. It is both a dynamic place, a physical location that belongs to all, and a vital program, a network of classes, services and a learning hub that centers the school’s social and academic development as it fosters a community of collaboration, learning, and a love of literacy.
The mission of the Kickemuit Middle School Library is to promote the joy of reading, to nurture the development of lifelong independent learning, to reinforce the curriculum by providing access to information in all forms, and to collaborate with staff members to provide engaging learning experiences.

Why should ALL Students Have Access to the KMS School Library and its Teacher-Librarian?

Best Practices
Why do we have Open Library, Book Browsing, Digital Access to Library Services, and a School Library Website?
"The fundamental elements of a responsive school library that enable the school librarian to act quickly and effectively to meet the curricular needs of educators and learners are:
• “flexible, open, unrestricted, and equitable access” (AASL 2018, 56) to the school library and resources on an as-needed basis
• opportunity for school librarians to collaborate as full instructional partners who co-plan, co-teach, and co-assess with classroom educators
• 24/7 access to digital school library resources"

Why do we have collaborations and co-teaching with team, specialists, and other teachers?
"School librarians provide strategic leadership in instructional design, collaboration, and co-teaching through their global perspective. Because their work impacts all disciplines and grade levels, school librarians are in a unique position to leverage their skills and implement cross-curricular initiatives. School librarians empower the entire learning community to effectively use information and technology for a variety of tasks."

How does the Rhode Island Basic Education Plan define an effective School Library Program?
“G‐13‐1.3.11 Library and Media. A high quality library‐media program provides all students with multiple opportunities to access and interact with library‐media instruction and materials necessary to acquire proficiency in the essential learning skills that support the curriculum.” The “multiple opportunities” speaks to the need to have equal access to the library through Open Library, which is also addressed in the BEP’s section on “Reading” and “Independent Learning.” Within the BEP, the role of the teacher-librarian as an instructional partner with other staff members is reinforced with this language: “ Rather than simply disseminating information, library‐media programs shall be collaborative and centered on the process of learning.”
Library Classes
Why do students have Library Class?
"School librarian instruction results in students who read and utilize print and digital resources for curricular and personalized learning needs. School librarians teach students how to be inquiring learners who evaluate and use both print and digital information efficiently, effectively, and ethically, with the goal of developing lifelong learning and literacy skills (AASL 2007). School librarians lead the way in digital learning and literacies by teaching and providing professional development in their school communities and districts."
In Rhode Island, Teacher-Librarians must be professional, certified teachers with master's degrees.
