February 2020
The Principal's Corner
The month of January was a productive transition back to the routines of school. I enjoyed seeing the amount of families that attended both our Chick-Fil-A and STEAM nights. Thank you to our dedicated teachers for volunteering their time at both of the events.
PreK-6th Grade New Student Registration and Open Enrollment Registration for the 2020-2021 school year is ongoing. If you know of any family who wishes to be part of the Canyon Rim family, please pass along this information and have our new families complete the registration process online. As of August, 20, 2019 students already accepted to a GPS school through open enrollment will not be required to re-apply for open enrollment each year as long as they remain at the current school. Please be advised that open enrollment privileges can be revoked annually due to capacity, student misconduct, excessive absences, etc. Please refer to Policy JFB below for more details. If your student’s open enrollment will not be renewed for the 2020-2021 school year, you will be contacted by May 1, 2020.

As always if there are ever any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to your child's classroom teacher or the front office. We are here to educate, support and assist in growing your child(ren). Thank you for all you do to continue to support Canyon Rim!
Best Regards,

Nurse's Corner: CRE is Latex-free!
CRE is a Latex-free school, as we have students on campus who are extremely allergic to Latex. Because Latex powder can be transferred through Latex and even Mylar balloons, we ask that parents keep the birthday celebration balloons at home. Thank you!
Nurse's Corner: For Parents of 5th Graders
To: Parent(s)/Guardian(s) of current 5th grade students,
Next year for 6th grade, your child will be required to have two immunizations. State law requires that ALL Sixth graders must have these two vaccines:
Tdap vaccine (Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis)
Students entering sixth grade must obtain a dose of Tdap. Your child would not have received this vaccine any time in their lives previously. Kindergarten students are required to have DTaPs. This is not the same as a Tdap.
Meningococcal vaccine (MCV4)
Students entering sixth grade must obtain a dose of Meningococcal vaccine. It protects against bacterial meningitis. Your child would not have received this vaccine any time previously in their life.
These two shots are given once a child turns 11 years old. If your 5th grader has already turned 11yrs old, I highly encourage you to get the shots done now so you don’t have to think about it when school starts next August. I also suggest that if your child is not yet 11 yrs old, but has a birthday coming soon, to schedule an appt. after their birthday so that they can get their immunizations done now. For those students who will not be 11 years old until after school starts next August, this does not apply to them at this time. They must be 11 years old to receive the immunizations.
Once your child has had their immunizations, please send in an updated shot record so that I can update their record here at school.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
Thank you,

Social Worker's Corner
Hello, Cougar Families!
We have continued to learn about managing our emotions. We have discussed the three-step process when we notice our strong emotions: 1) Stop 2) Name Your Feeling 3) Calm Down. We have also talked about “Belly Breathing” and learned how to use our breath to calm down.
I encourage you to watch a video titled, “Why Do We Lose Control of our Emotions” (click here) with your student. This is a video that explains how our brains respond/react when we have strong emotions. It also provides ideas to help students cope with their strong emotions. We have also learned some new vocabulary! Ask your children about the following words we have learned: Assertive, Aggressive, Passive, Empathy, Respectful Learner, Peer Pressure and Emotions.
As your students prepare for testing, I encourage them to use their “self-talk” by reminding themselves to be confident and to stay focused. We have also been practicing “belly breathing” as a technique to manage test anxiety and I encourage mindful breathing for all students.
If your family is needing supports or resources, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone at (480) 984-3216 x306 or email me at Kerry.draney@gilbertschools.net. I am happy to support your family as best I can.
Have a wonderful week!
Positively,
