Not Just Books!
Build Skills Every Day
Little interactions every day can add up to a BIG foundation for learning.
- Talk: Spring has sprung! Stop to smell the flowers... and count their petals too! Then find plants of the same color and compare them.
- Sing: Listen for bird songs together. Try out the sounds and patterns you hear! Imagine what they could be singing about.
- Read: Don't be afraid to pull out a chapter book to read to even your littlest ones! Grab a copy of Winnie the Pooh, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle, My Father's Dragon, or whatever your family likes to read. Be sure to have playdough, crayons, or blocks ready to keep little hands busy!
- Write: Put those fine motor skills to good use and decorate some cookies! Let your toddler squeeze the bag of frosting, or try putting some on the back of a spoon to smear. Put the sprinkles on a plate and practice the pincer grasp to pick them up individually.
- Play: Put your little one in old clothes, (or no clothes when the weather warms up), and find a mud puddle to play in! Squish the mud, pack it firm, and make mud cakes together. Be ready for the cleanup!
Go Ahead... Sing!
Pat-a-Cake
Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker’s man,
Bake me a cake as fast as you can.
Roll it, and pat it, and mark it with a "B",
And put it in the oven for Baby and me!
Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker’s man,
Bake me a cake as fast as you can.
Mix it, and stir it, and bake it just right.
Good from the first 'til the very last bite!
1000 Books Before Kindergarten has gone virtual! To participate, register your child via Beanstack (click image above). Set up an account, if you haven't already, and the challenge will pop up on your child's dashboard. 1000 Books B4K is available only for children five and under. It is an ongoing challenge that will run simultaneously with any seasonal reading challenges in which you participate.
If you are already working your way through the paper logs available at the library, don't worry! We will keep the paper option for as long as you need it. And as always, you can grab the app (iphone or android) and do it on your own!
