teachers taking the "lead".
A recent article written by Laura Calverley in the Reporter Today explains a fairly new initiative in which a growing number of Seekonk teachers are participating. The article starts by explaining that: "A group of teachers, parents and students with connections to Seekonk have created an organization, the Total Teacher Project, which offers a new strategy to improve student performance by focusing on teachers as leaders. The non-profit organization’s vision is for teachers to see themselves as leaders and to demonstrate their leadership qualities for students to model." Check out the rest of the article here!

Work Starts From Within
We have had a great second week! Teachers and students are getting to know each other and content area work is beginning to start.
We had some great class meetings on Tuesday where students heard about building a culture of respect from Mr. Aguiar; what they need to do academically and for community service from Mrs. Whatley; and about being purposeful, acting with integrity, and building their character from me.
As I think about the idea of building character and pushing through difficult times I think of my following belief.
It's not about a skill set, it's about a mindset.
Your students will struggle as they move through life. The goal of the great teachers we have here at Seekonk High School is productive struggle. While this is difficult to allow to happen it is designed to assist students in learning from their failures. I asked for something from parents during Freshmen and New Student Orientation. I asked that they trust us as professionals when it comes to educating their children. I ask the same of all parents. We understand that you are entrusting us with your most valuable possession in life. Like you, we want our students to be great; just like we want our own children to be great. Here is where we must understand the following: You can embed the ability to be great in others, but the act itself requires the individual's own commitment and determination.
Only by working together can parents and teachers embed the ability for our students to be great, but we must also understand that it ultimately relies on the students themselves. So we all must work with and support them so that they understand that success comes from learning from failure and becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable. Once they build that ability to be resilient, students will be ready to experience success on their own; without teachers or parents guiding them. After all, isn't independent, long lasting success what we really want for our students?
around school...
Guidance - Mrs. Whatley
Seniors can begin to sign up for College Rep visits. Area colleges send an admissions representative to meet with students on a designated day. Students should review the list of colleges and select those that they would like to hear more about. Seniors are limited to 6 college information sessions. The list of colleges visiting is posted outside of the guidance office. The list is updated weekly as new colleges schedule their visits throughout the fall. Information sessions last about 30 minutes.
PSATs are going to be offered here at Seekonk High School on October 11th beginning at 7:30 AM. All sophomores are scheduled to participate and the testing fee for grade 10 students will be paid by the school as a condition of a grant we receive. Any juniors electing to take the PSAT will soon receive information on how to sign up and pay for the test. The testing fee for juniors will the posted CollegeBoard rate of $16 per test taker. Juniors on free and reduced lunch should speak to their guidance counselor about a fee waiver if they are interested in taking the test.
We hope to see many of you at Open House this Thursday evening. Please bring a copy of your student's schedule to follow for the evening.
Assistant Principal - Mr. Aguiar
I would like to make families aware that books and materials handed out to students need to be returned in good condition at the completion of the school year. Please be sure to take good care of of these items so that future students can make proper use of them. If anyone still owes books or supplies outstanding they need to be turned in this week. Thank You
OBLIGATION LIST LANGUAGE FROM HANDBOOK
Obligations for the purpose of this handbook include, but are not limited to text books, library books, detention hours, and materials fees. It is important that part of the learning process include responsibility and accountability for fulfilling one’s obligations. Therefore, students who do not fulfill their obligations to Seekonk High School by the designated times will receive consequences. Specifically, students who have outstanding obligations will be restricted from the following:
- participation in or attendance at any extracurricular activity including Spirit Week.
- all sports
- all dances (including prom)
- participation in graduation ceremony
The administration holds the right to assign additional, appropriate consequences based upon the circumstance if necessary. Obligations as well as their consequences carry over from year to year.
warrior cries
Warrior cries are shout outs to staff and students here at Seekonk High School. They are our way of recognizing hard work, creative thinking, and characteristics that make us proud to be part of this community. Please contact Dr. Jones if you wish to give a "warrior cry" to someone!
Mrs. Rok...for "putting in an incredible amount of time and effort to make sure the safety and well being of our students is always first! From running trainings to taking care of physicals and immunizations to arranging for students to have the least restrictive experience when they have been injured or need assistance; Mrs. Rok continually puts forth her best effort. In addition to her duties at the high school, she also coordinates all of the nurses in the district! If you have any kind of medical issue; Mrs. Rok is who you want taking care of whatever you need." - Dr. Jones
Social Studies - Mrs. Salisbury
As part of the interdisciplinary days on August 31st and September 1st, the Social Studies department incorporated a few activities that aligned to some of the ideas from the schoolwide summer read, Shift. Mr. Censabella has his students work on a Google Slide activity about famous missing people in history. Mrs. Salisbury had her classes work on creating a travel itinerary of famous historical landmarks across America and/or Europe.
The Social Studies department is offering two new courses this year, AP Psychology and Civics. Mr. Petrucci is teaching AP Psychology and brings many years of experience in teaching psychology to this course. Mr. Censabella is teaching the Civics course with his years of experience in teaching government. Good luck this year!
Mr. Censabella would like parents to know that he has a website for his courses. It is a valuable resource for both his students and their parents. Please check it out if you are enrolled in any of his courses.
Does Your Student Know About the SHS Book Club?!?
It’s true! Seekonk High has a monthly book club that is open to all SHS students who like to read current young adult fiction and talk about it in a friendly, casual environment.
