Who we are...
Our first host is Ms. Zakiya Bakari who joined our Secondary School team in August 2017.

1. Your name and position in Ajman Academy?
Zakiya Bakari, Position: Subject Leader for Design and Arts
2. Where are you from?
Good question, I am very International, I was born in Dubai, lived in UK most of my life, Parents were born in Zanzibar who are of Yemeni descent.
3. Do you have a family?
Married with 3 lovely kids: Abdulwahab aged 11yrs, Sanaa aged 9 yrs and Safiya aged 7 yrs.
4. Your childhood nickname?
Zak…blame that on my older sister
5. What's your favourite food?
Lasagne
6. What are your hobbies?
Painting and craft
7. Where's your favourite place in the UAE?
Mirdif, which is where I live. I love the community and the diversity but is still culturally rich.
8. Most memorable experience as a teacher so far?
When I first walked into a workshop to teach woodwork. The students were surprised to see who I was (woman with a hijab). First thing one student said to me was “ Nice one, that's brilliant!” I am forever grateful that I can inspire young girls in an unconventional setting for women.
9. Can you share with us your funniest moment in your teaching career?
Bumping into a student after many years and trying to figure out where I met them last and then finally being reminded that I am getting old.
10. How about your most challenging moment in your teaching career?
Saying goodbye to students that I had taught for many years and realising that I have to finally let them go to embark on their independent lives.
11. Who's your childhood hero?
Oprah Winfrey – Strong, resilient and successful woman.
12. If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be?
I would of set up a boutique craft shop and sell all my own crafty products.
