Mrs. Murr's Class News
December 13, 2017
Thank you! So much to be thankful for....
Heads Up
A homework update will be passed along to you after the new year. :)
Class Happenings...
Science: When I returned we wrapped up our changes to Earth's surface unit with a short research project. Students presented a process or force that changes the Earth. We hope to wrap up our natural resources unit before Christmas break. We will then begin our life science units with organisms and the human body.
Writing: With our new Wonders program, it spirals the different genres of writing. They have already written many narratives and informational papers. We have been looking closely at the parts of an informative essay (intro, body and conclusion). They know a nice little chant they could share with you at home. :)
Reading: Many skills and strategies have been hit the last few weeks with Wonders. A big idea was determining a theme of a story, drama or poem from details in the text. Currently students are in two groups practicing fluency with a reader's theatre script. It's so fun to hear the great expression each student adds to play their role.
Important News
- Permission slips for our upcoming field trip went home today. We will be going to the power plant next Wednesday for our natural resources unit. If you would like to join us as a chaperone, please contact me as soon as you can. We have touched the surface with researching nonrenewable and renewable resources. Students are now choosing a resource they are most interested in to research at a deeper level and prepare a poster.
- Book Orders were sent home on Monday. Please return by tomorrow if you need/want a book as a gift. Orders will be in before kids leave for break.
- Jars are needed for next week please. If you have an extra mason jar or jelly jar around, please send with your child for a craft. Thank you!
- Our classroom Christmas party will be next Friday around 2:30. I will contact parents who signed up at Parent Connection Day. If you would like to contribute in any way (even if you didn't sign up), please feel free. :)
- Class Dojo invites were sent home if you need to still connect. Some are familiar with Dojo. It is a nice and easy way to communicate about your child or class happenings.
Shout Outs!!
I have been so impressed with this group of kids. Working in a group can be difficult. However, I see and hear kindness and respect for others all the time from this class! Nice work fifth graders!
