What is Down Syndrome?

Down syndrome is a chromosomal condition that is associated with intellectual disability, a characteristic facial appearance, and weak muscle tone (hypotonia) in infancy. Most of these victims of this syndrome are children. The name was chosen after the English physician John Langdon Down. He was the first to characterize the disease. Down syndrome was first found by the French physician Jérôme Lejeune in 1959. He noticed that instead of having 46 chromosomes, people with Down Syndrome had 47 chromosomes.


It is inherited usually genetically and sometimes by a mutation passed down in the genes . Down syndrome may be diagnosed by even before the baby is born they can check how the baby looks with gamma rays and they can see how it’s face looks to check if it has down syndrome or not.

The symptoms of down syndrome are:

  • flat facial features.

  • small head and ears.

  • short neck.

  • bulging tongue.

  • eyes that slant upward.

  • oddly shaped ears.

  • poor muscle tone

People with down syndrome usually get treated even from home like getting a social therapist, physical therapist, and many more therapists and having special needs. This disorder doesn't has an exact price for treating it, but there is also no need for a treatment.

Down syndrome may happen to everyone but specially to woman that get pregnant at 40 or older. Pregnant women can know if their baby has Down Syndrome by taking a screening screen during the first trimester (first 3 months of pregnancy). This genetic disorder is present all over the world. There are people with down syndrome in every part of the world.


Down syndrome is a worldwide disorder. All of the countries have a chance of having a citizen acquire down syndrome. Every year 6 thousand babies are born with down syndrome and approximately 1.6 million children in the world have this disorder. In Mexico there are 13,199 people diagnosed with down syndrome. To a person with down syndrome approximately it costs 70 pesos per day at least and 180 pesos per day normally. The treatment of this disorder costs $4287 US dollars for direct health care including hospital, medical, pharmaceutical, respite and therapy, with a median cost of $1701.

The name of this genetic disorder is Down Syndrome. This disorder is causing news in the world because although this disorder is not new there is still no cure for it and it’s numbers are increasing. News have been traveling, and they are about people that have down syndrome and are living happy and full lives. This news take place in the whole world. People from all over the world are born with down syndrome. The most recent news about down syndrome was on March. 5, 2015. Families and people with down syndrome are involved in this news when they are being interviewed.

Some organizations currently helping people with Down syndrome are: national Down Syndrome Society (NDSS), Global Down Syndrome Foundation, Lumind Foundation, and many more.

We chose these web tools because our project relies on them due to the teacher telling us to use them and because it gives variety to the presentation

3) What audience are you focused on?

We are focused on the classroom on the students in 7c Ats 2014-2015


The current and past treatments people use were getting a social therapist, physical therapist, and many more therapists and having special needs. Also the symptoms of down syndrome are flat facial features, small head and ears, short neck, bulging tongue, eyes that slant upward, oddly shaped ears, and poor muscle tone.

Surgical intervention in children with Down syndrome has a high risk of complications, particularly infection and wound healing problems. Careful anesthetic airway management is needed because of the associated risk of cervical spine instability. Preoperative evaluation for anesthesia must include adequate evaluation of the airway and the patient’s neurological status. Since the 1970s, public schools are required by law to provide a free and appropriate education to children with Down syndrome. Also people with down syndrome have their own ability, talent, and personality. People with Down syndrome benefit from loving homes, early intervention, inclusive education, appropriate medical care and positive public attitudes.
