Introduction to Google Apps

Unit: Google Apps - Lesson 1

Aim: Students will learn about Google Apps and log in for the first time.

Do Now: Quietly sit down and log into your computer. (3 mins)

Vocabulary Words:

Application: a program that gives a computer instructions that provides the user with tools to accomplish a task.

The term storage or memory refer to those parts of a computer that retain data for some period of time, possibly even after the computer is turned off.

What is Google Apps?

Google Apps is a free service that consists of the following :

Google Drive is a free service from Google that allows you to store files from your computer online and access them anywhere using the cloud. Google Drive also gives you access to one of Google's most popular services, Google Docs.

Google Docs is a free, web-based application for creating documents, spreadsheets, and more. In this lesson, you'll learn more about Google Drive and Google Docs and how the cloud can help you in your everyday life.

What is cloud storage?

Think of cloud storage as a way to save your files in multiple places at once. What this means is that anything you put into Google Drive will be accessible as long an an Internet connection exists.

How to access your Google account:

I have created Google accounts for each of you. Your account address will be your first name + your last name + the last two digits of your graduation year I have created a special password for each class that I will provide for you during class time.

Your Turn

Now that you have seen how to log in to Google for the first time, it is your turn to try.

Follow these steps:

  1. Go to
  2. On the top right hand corner click: Sign In
  3. Enter your @sunsetparkprep login ID
  4. Enter your password
  5. Accept the agreement
  6. Enter a new password.
  7. Verify that you have logged in by looking at the top right hand corner.
