Week of May 27
Originally called Decoration Day, this holiday was first proclaimed by General John Logan in May of 1868. General Logan ordered all men under his command to spend part of the day decorating the graves of fallen soldiers. On Monday, May 27th, we will pay tribute to those who gave their last great measure of devotion to liberty. Throughout the country Americans will pay their respects to those who lost their lives in service to our country. Let us not forget that the precious freedom we are so fortunate to enjoy here in America was purchased with the lives of those brave men and women who served our country in times of war. An excerpt from the dedication plaque on the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial, located on the grounds of the State Capitol in Sacramento, sums up the sacrifice of our brave soldiers, "All Gave Some, Some Gave All."
On the topic of Sacrifice, I also want to take a moment and let us all consider the many sacrifices our teachers and staff take to better our students, our community, and the district. In my experience, the best teachers have an inner drive that helps them realize their hard work improves the quality of their students’ lives. They get that teaching is a tough way to make a living, but they pride themselves on doing whatever it takes to help the kids. Some sacrifices many of us take for granted include the long hours teachers endure, the continuous expanding of their knowledge for the better of themselves and others, practice of patience, and an ever-growing heart.
Teaching is a calling. Not everyone has the will or the stamina to do it well. It takes love, pride, and an almost sacred commitment that can't be explained in words.
With only 6 1/2 days left in the 2018-2019 school year, be sure to send a Thank You to anyone who has reached out to help your child. The thought alone can bring a smile to a deserving face!

Fun fact-People born on October 30 are in touch with their feelings. You do not shy away from expressing exactly how you feel about someone or a situation. The planet Pluto is an instrumental aspect of your life. This celestial body is responsible for your productivity, dedication, and sense of mystery.
Her favorite hobby outside of school and teaching are:Hiking, Cooking, and Hanging with Family!
Mrs. Gelsone's favorite book or shall I say books is the Harry Potter series!
Carol says she likes to watch Game of Thrones on T.V.!
When asked if she is an animal lover, Carol replies, "Yes!" She has a dog named Henry and she also loves Panda Bears! (hehe, she's adorable!)
Her favorite holiday is Christmas!
Carol's favorite quote or words she tends to live by are:
"Treat others how you want to be treated."
When asked if she had a hero, Carol simply says, "my mom!"
Carol says she is most proud of her ability to take care of her own house and kids when she was single.
I asked Mrs. Gelsone to tell us a little about how she ended up where she is now and she said, "I moved here from South Dakota, got my teaching degree late, married a great man later in life that made me a better person!"
We love having Mrs. Gelsone with us at Alkek! She brightens every room and can send laughter rolling from person to person!
Thanks for all you do, Carol, we appreciate you so much!
Enjoy your spotlight!
