CONGRATULATIONS TO FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH!
Sincere words of congratulations are in order for the First United Methodist Church of Florence. This year, 2022, is the 200th anniversary of the establishment of this great church. With its founding in 1822, it is just four years younger than the City of Florence itself! As with many churches in those years, the congregants first met in a log cabin in downtown Florence, followed by other buildings as the church grew in numbers. (Note the accompanying photograph from a vintage postcard mailed to someone in Vina, Alabama, in 1915.) Eventually, the church was in a position to construct a very substantial – and very handsome - structure on the northwest corner of Seminary and Tuscaloosa Streets where it remains today as a solid anchor in downtown. Not surprisingly, the current building, too, has undergone various configurations, expansions, etc. over the years. (The second photograph portrays this beautiful building with its grand Ionic columns and its Greek Revival entry.) Community leaders in a wide range of fields – business, industry, law, education, politics, the Arts, etc. – have called this grand church their religious home. And that is still the case today. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that the citizens of Florence wish a resounding “Happy Bicentennial Birthday” to the First United Methodist Church of Florence, Alabama!
