A Note on the Impact of the Government Shutdown
(This note is from the Partnership for Public Service) We recognize that the partial government shutdown may have raised questions for students and soon-to-be-recent graduates about the status of federal internships and jobs. Here's what we know:
- Agencies are open, and many have posted vacancies on USAJOBS.gov! There are currently 327 opportunities open to students and recent graduates.
- If applicants have questions about specific job vacancies, they should reach out to the point of contact located at the bottom of vacancy announcements.
- Current interns who have questions about the number of credit hours they need to receive for their internships or opportunities for conversion to full-time employment should speak to their supervisors.
- Generally, if a vacancy announcement closed during the partial shutdown, and the agency was closed, the examination work was deferred until government reopened. If the position was exempt and the staff who do the examining were exempt, then the applications may have been processed. As a result, it is possible that there may be a delay in reviewing applications as agencies affected by the shutdown get back up and running.
- Some agencies were able to post new positions to USAJOBS.gov during the partial shutdown if it was an exempt position.
- The partial shutdown did not affect OPM's background investigation functions. To check the status of an e-QIP application, applicants should check with the office that initiated their application. If the agency has submitted an investigation request, they can also check the status of their case by calling 724-794-5612, extension 7000.
- Agencies are currently operating under a continuing resolution through Friday, February 15. We are closely monitoring the situation and remain hopeful that a deal will be reached to continue funding government. Given the uncertainty, we also know that agencies are beginning preparations in the event that there is another government shutdown.
- The Partnership for Public Service has been outspoken about the need for reforming the appropriations process and ensuring shutdowns do not occur in the future. For more on this, check out our CEO Max Stier's Politico op-ed, "How to break the shutdown fever."
