Social Studies

Students were learning about the leaders that we have in our city, state, and country. We have learned that, there are leaders that lead different communities, our leaders have different jobs depending on who they lead. And leaders help make laws, enforce laws, and make their communities a better place.

Students created a poster of 6 responsibilities about our Mayor, Scooter Gierisch.

Your Module 2 newsletter came home this week. Please review it to see what we are learning about in Math for the next few weeks. Students also came home with flash cards along with a letter about fact fluency. Please make sure your child is practicing count on facts nightly.

This week in Science, we have been reviewing states of matter and exploring the physical properties of each. Students have loved doing different activities to build on their knowledge of solids, liquids and gases.

Additionally, we compared the differences between a physical change and a chemical change by having a "pancake lab." The students were able to connect our everyday lives to Science by watching a liquid turning into a solid by means of a chemical change.

Writers Workshop

This week in Writers workshop, students wrote a narrative story about a time they were happy. This composition will be scored and saved as evidence for their current stage of writing. We will share these results at parent conferences. Another writing sample will be written in May. The two writing samples will be compared to determine their growth as writers for the year.

Readers Workshop

This week in Readers workshop we used a variety of strategies, such as story sequence, questioning and rereading to help our comprehension. We also learned to use text evidence to justify our thinking in our readers response notebooks.
