The Six Gazette
October Edition
Learning in Progress
We are well over midway through the 1st quarter, and our students are settling in to daily routines, procedures, and learning throughout their classes. It feels great to be back in the swing of things, and we are adjusting to our new normal ๐ท. We can tell that students have truly missed being in the building, socializing with their friends, and engaging in learning in person. It has been great to see them engaged in their classrooms.
BOY Assessments
Students conducted Beginning of the Year assessments, which will help guide teachers in how to best support your child's learning. Teachers will be meeting with students (during Discovery) to hold a student conference to help them understand their present level in reading and math. Students will be challenged to during Discovery (and in their daily classes) to show growth in both areas over the course of the year. We will conduct mid-year assessments, and use that information to track their growth.
In Case You Missed It
We had a great Title I/Meet the Teacher night Wednesday, Sept. 29th. Parents circulated their child's schedule to meet each teacher, learn more about the course curriculum, expectations for the class (and team), as well as opportunities to sign-up for extra-curricular opportunities to include:
- 21st Century (afterschool program)
- Swing Pals (golf club)
- MSEN Pre-College (at NC State)
- Durham Children's Initiative
Chick-Fil-A dinner boxes were provided to 200 families, and also signed up for parent portal. If you missed out on this event, please be sure to join us for our next Title I Night.
Interims Have Been Distributed
The first set of interims have been provided. Your student should have received a progress report for each class. If you have not already done so, please be sure to sign up for Parent Portal, which allows you to access your child's grades. If you have any concerns or questions about your child's progress or are interested in a parent conference please reach out to the team lead for your child's team.
- Avengers - Ms. Byrd or Ms. Watkins
- Guardians - Mr. Cody
- Titans - Ms. Saunders
Hispanic Heritage Month
Sept. 15 - Oct. 15th is National Hispanic Heritage Month ๐๐บ. We are very excited to celebrate Hispanic and LatinX culture with our students and families! We will be highlighting key figures during this time to bring awareness to our students. Teachers have been encouraged to embed culturally diverse lessons into their content as well. We will cap off the month with an amazing Title I Night on October 28th. We want ALL families to join us in the celebration of language, life, culture, and cuisine! We hope to see you there.
