Get Psyched for Heritage Week
We are finalizing our speakers for Heritage Week and the reservation information will be sent via email this Wednesday (10/31). When you receive the email, please read over the descriptions of the sessions and look for presentations that might apply to your curriculum and/or those from which you think your students would find benefit. The Heritage Week committee has worked hard to bring speakers whose message about legacy will leave a lasting impact on our students.
Below is another message from our concluding speaker, Mike Smith. This one will give you chills!
Strategic Framework Input Presentations
The Office of Planning, Innovation, and Accountability launched a virtual town hall on October 10 for the purposes of providing input on the work for our next strategic framework. As part of this widespread effort, the division wants to share with all staff the progress we have seen under Compass to 2020 and how you can be involved in the planning process.
We have been asked to share the steps on how our employees can engage with the planning process in a full staff meeting before the end of October. As we have already had two staff meetings this month, we did not want to make everyone give up more precious after school time. The admin team will, therefore, give the presentation every block TODAY (Monday, 10/29) in the Schola. The presentation will last approximately 15 minutes. Teachers should come to the Schola during their planning block for this brief presentation at the times indicated below. Thanks in advance for your help with this.
Block 1--7:40
Block 2--9:10
Block 3--10:40
Block 4--1:00
Federal Cards
All Block 1A teachers must pick up your federal cards in the mail room before 1A on Monday morning. Your federal cards, E1 form, and class roster will be in a red folder in your mailbox. Compare your E1 form to the class roster in your folder and note any discrepancies on your roster. Distribute your federal cards and encourage your students to return their cards on Wednesday. In Schoology or another electronic platform, place reminders for your parents and students to complete and return their cards to you. Thank you for all of your help!
I Make a Difference
From Jennifer Cholick
Most deserving of this week’s “I make a difference award” is Jennifer Renne. Jen goes above and beyond the call of duty to exceed in all areas of teaching students and leading her department. Jen has a strong relationship with her six classes of students as well as other academy students who she mentors. It is clear that her students have a passion for Engineering as they follow this education and career path post high school. She is the Technology Department Chair, serves on the ILT, co-sponsor of Lady Eagle Engineer (LEE) club, and is a sponsor for the Technology Student Association (TSA). Jen sets the expectation high for her students and motivates them to work to their potential. She is an asset to our school and academy and we are all thankful for all she accomplishes. She makes a difference for our students every day!

Announcements & Reminders
Boxes needed: As part of our Heritage Week celebration, we will be collecting items through Block 1A classes for a local charity. If you have any boxes (i.e. paper boxes) that can be used for this purpose, please give them to Katie Bennett in Room 208.
Advisory This Wednesday: We will launch Advisory via Schoology this week! If you loaded the lesson into your Schoology course at last Monday’s staff meeting, you and your students are ready to go. This week’s lesson contains student tasks from the counseling department like setting up a Schoology portfolio and looking at the profile of a graduate, as well as a pre-Heritage Week activity and a student survey. If you have questions please see your departmental Schoology champion, Mrs. Singer, Mrs. Sanderlin or Mr. Moore before Wednesday.
NMSI Student Celebration: On Thursday, November 1 at 11:30, we will host a celebration to acknowledge those students who made a qualifying score on any Math, Science or English AP exam last May. Students being honored will have an invitation to the celebration which will serve as their pass. Please allow them to come to the schola at 11:25. Students are asked to bring an ID in order to receive their NMSI award money that day.
Virtual Learning Day: Don't forget that next Tuesday (November 6) is our second Virtual Learning day. You will create a virtual learning experience for your B day classes following the same guidelines given for the October 8 VL day. If you have any questions related to this, please see your AP, Kelly Singer, or Krissy Sanderlin.
Pink Out Game: This Friday is our Pink Out Football Game as well as senior night. We hope that you and your family can join us for this event. Don't forget that if you purchased one of the Pink Out shirts through the JV cheerleaders, you can pair it with your jeans on Friday!
Professional Learning
As the division transitions from Professional Development to Professional Learning, we are moving away from a mandatory amount of yearly points. New Virginia Teaching licenses will be awarded for a ten-year period and require 360 points. The Frontline Catalog still exists and is full of learning opportunities. Points can be earned in a variety of ways from online annual mandatory training to different professional learning avenues you chose yourself. These range from face-to-face meetings, podcasts, long-term course work, and one time meetings on all kinds of topics. As you seek out opportunities, you can now exercise voice and choice in deciding where and how you will learn and grow. Your work during in-service week earned you up to 6 points which are already accounted for in Frontline. Your PL pathway work will earn you a minimum of 6 more points this year. You are welcome to attend other PL pathway sessions if you are interested in the topics. The key is that we are continuously learning, growing, and honing our craft. You can check you licensure status at any time using Frontline.
United Way Campaign
It is that time of the year when we have the opportunity to support the United Way of South Hampton Roads in their efforts to help our community. This year the process has been digitized and we no longer have to complete a paper form. If you contributed last year, you will have the option to renew your gift or start a new gift. The process only takes a few minutes. Here is how to donate. Please make your donation by November 19.
1) From a school computer, start the process by clicking on this link
2) Click on "Give Today"
3) Choose your gift option:
4) A receipt will be emailed to you after you submit your contribution.
5) If you select to make a cash/check contribution, please see Mr. Muñoz.
