Letter from Principal Nelson
Smallville-
All Hallow’s Eve is just around the corner, and we are excited to announce that Smalloween is back! Yes, it will be different than in years past, but the point is that it is happening! We are so excited to continue this time-honored tradition with our students and want to reward them for their hard work and effort throughout this school year. Check out the website and this newsletter for more information.
HB 4545 and Accelerated Instruction
The numbers are in and we have plans in place to address the disruption of last year in regards to Math and English. We have already began campus-wide interventions in Math and will be adding ELA/Reading remediation very soon. To be able to effectively address all of our students’ needs and not disrupt our students’ day nor require summer or Saturday school, we need parent/guardians of eligible students (STAAR failures, students who did not take STAAR, etc..) to “opt in” to larger group tutorials. Today you will be receiving a Google form (or possibly 2 if your student is needs ELA anbd Math) asing for your permission to “opt out” of the 4:1 ratio for tutorials so our educators can work with larger, more inclusive groups. Whether you receive one or two forms, we ask that you fill them out as soon as possible. Thank you in advance.
SCAs (Short Cycle Assessments):
This week every student on campus took SCAs in all STAAR tested subjects (ELA, Math, 8th grade Social Studies, 8th grade Science), so please make sure to ask your student how h/she did and then reward them for trying their best. We love these assessments because they let us know exactly what we need to work on to be succeed in class. Unlike the STAAR, a post-mortem report, the data we get from these tests help shape what and how we teach our students. We’ll have another round of these in December, with more questions, and all we will be looking for is growth.
With assessments, we score our kids in regards to approaches, meets, and masters. While we all strive for mastery, we know that for some it may be an unattainable goal. Not so with kindness; all of our students are well on their way to mastery. As long as they are, and we all support them in this journey, they can do no wrong.
Have a grea weekend and enjoy the cool temperatures.
