Our Highlights: What We've Been Rockin' At!
We are rockin' at reading! We've recently learned about reading by being fortune tellers and news reporters. You might wonder what on earth either of those things have to do with learning how to become a better reader...the answer is...a whole lot! We learned about Madam, who predicts the future and we did the same while reading That's Good! That's Bad! We used what Madam is good at to help us become better readers and predict the future of the what was going to happen in the story next. We even referred to our crystal ball to help us see what was on the next page. We also learned about Quincy the Questioner, he is a news reporter. He asks the hard questions to find and understand the story. He mostly asks thick questions. Thin questions are questions that have their answers right there on the page. Think questions are questions that you must think about to answer and are the answers are not right there on the page; they allow you to make connections to the story in order to answer. With thin questions you doing more finding in the book to answer, while with thick questions you are doing more thinking and connecting in order to answer. When readers are connected and thinking deeply while reading, that's when they love what they are reading and gain the most from what they are reading. As news reporters, we read Put Me in the Zoo and came up with thin and thick questions. Then we read in partners and came up with our own thin and thick questions. We met back together to debrief and reflect and came up with one last thick question...ask your child what exactly that was! If you heard that I can make red dots appear out of thin air like the character in the story...you might be right! Also, don't forget to also ask your child the difference between a thin and thick question!
