Orana Catholic Primary School
Term 2 Week 2
TO GIVE IS TO RECEIVE
Our community values an attitude of enthusiastically applying energy and effort to become better learners. Excellence is evident when:
• we do our best to develop our talents and share them with others
• we have high expectations of what we can achieve
• we take risks and experiment with the way we learn
• we work hard to do our best work
• we celebrate our achievements
A Prayer for Mothers
Loving God,
as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children,
so you watch over your Church.
Bless these women,
that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers.
Let the example of their faith and love shine forth.
Grant that we, their sons and daughters,
may honour them always
with a spirit of profound respect.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
Dear Parents and Carers,
This weekend is Mothers’ Day. We have many mothers, grandmothers and mother figures in our school who give their absolute best for the benefit of our children. We thank you for what you do and celebrate having such loving, generous, caring, gentle, selfless people in our lives. We would like to wish all mothers and mother figures a very happy Mothers’ Day this weekend and hope you will spend a great day being spoiled by your families.
This morning the P and F hosted the Mothers’ Day Breakfast. It was wonderful to be able to gather together to celebrate mothers and grandmothers as a community. Many thanks to the hours of preparation and organisation put in by all the volunteers, many of them mums themselves. Thank-you to Priya Narsing and Bek Johnston for coordinating . A special thank-you also to Louise Palumbo and her team of volunteers for organising the Mother’s Day Gift Workshops. We hope you enjoy your gifts. Thank-you also to the P and F Executive team for all their behind the scenes work to continue our strong community spirit during these challenging times.
The significant reduction in covid restrictions has meant that many events and procedures have been able to resume. We are looking forward to reconnecting in person and continuing to build upon the great community spirit that we are privileged to share at Orana Catholic Primary School. Latest communication and information regarding covid can be found on the school website at the following link: https://www.orana.wa.edu.au/covid-19-portal/
Whilst parents and carers are able to be onsite for school events, to volunteer for classroom parent help rosters, attend parent teacher meetings and support school services, we ask that students are dropped off at the classroom door for the time being whilst case numbers are high. All positive covid cases are required to isolate for at least seven days meaning that parents and carers who are covid positive are unable to attend school including the drive through line. If the situation arises where a child cannot get to school as both parents are covid positive, please inform us so that class work can be provided.
Thank you to families for the way in which you are using the safe (kerb) side of the vehicle when dropping off and collecting your children each afternoon. Please ensure when entering the school precinct, that your speed is not above walking pace, particularly as your approach the green shed where students are waiting.
From next week, students in Years 3 and 5 will be involved in NAPLAN testing. This is a national test to track the progress of Year 3 and 5 students for the country, the state, systems and for schools. Some students become anxious around these tests by the attention placed on them by the media. These are a snapshot of how your child has performed on a particular day and should not cause any stress for your child or family. It is important that routines are maintained as per a regular school week and that children, as expected each week, attend, are well rested, well fed and happy to come to school. We utilise these tests for school planning and monitoring along with many other sources of data and your child just needs to know to try their best.
Kindy interviews for 2023 commenced last term. If you would like your child to be considered for a place in Kindergarten for next year and have not yet put in an application form in, you will need to do so as soon as possible.
The latest Term 2 calendar can be found on our website. https://www.orana.wa.edu.au/calendar/
Any changes or updates will be added to the Events Calendar also on our website.
Take care and God bless,
Dee Johnston

COVID-19 Update
As a school we are continuing to navigate the ever changing COVID-19 protocols. WA Health has announced new baseline health measures. WA Health announced that schools are no longer required to issue correspondence to parents and carers; however, while case numbers remain high, we will provide responses to the self-reporting portal entries and a case summary in the newsletter. Health and hygiene promotion and enhanced cleaning regimes remain in place. For now, some risk minimisation strategies remain in place which are over and above the government measures for the safety of our community.
WA Health will provides information directly to the Covid-19 positive person / caregiver following their registration of a Covid-19 positive test result with WA Health via this Link. Parents and carers are encouraged to continue their reporting of close contact or Covid-19 positive status to schools through the Covid-19 self-reporting portal via this link. Please do not underestimate the importance of informing the school of a positive Covid-19 case / Close Contact status. Your actions will ensure the risk to others is minimised and that we do our very best to limit the spread of the virus across our community.
Further information on school operating guidelines for the new baseline settings is available on the school website.
Week 2 (30th April - 6th May)
There were 29 cases reported to the school this week.
The positive cases are in isolation, as per WA Health requirements. Please carefully monitor for symptoms and seek testing if symptoms develop. Please keep your children at home if they are unwell.
NAPLAN 12th - 15th May
- Tuesday, 12th May 9am - Year 3/5 Writing
- Wednesday, 13th May 9am - Year 3/5 Reading
- Thursday, 14th May 9am - Year 3/5 Conventions of Language
- Friday, 15th May 9am - Year 3/5 Numeracy
If your child is absent on any assessment date, catch up days will run the following week.
NAPLAN is a nationwide measure through which parents, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community can determine how well young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community.
• NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process. NAPLAN does not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. A child’s teacher will have the best insight into the child’s educational progress. NAPLAN results do not measure overall school quality.
• NAPLAN questions are directly linked to the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics. As such, the best preparation students can do for NAPLAN is to learn what they do in the classroom every day. On its own, NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for, and students are not expected to do so.
• The assessments allow parents to see how their child is progressing against national standards in literacy and numeracy and over time. Along with other school assessment reports, NAPLAN supports parents in discussing with teachers their child’s strengths and areas for improvement.
• NAPLAN results can assist teachers by providing additional information to support their professional judgement about students’ levels of literacy and numeracy attainment and progress.
• NAPLAN can support school improvement by enabling teachers to monitor their students’ progress over time against the national measure, to identify strengths and areas to improve in teaching programs, and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.
Faith in Action
Junior Community and First Communion Commitment Mass
Now that restrictions are lifting, we will be celebrating our first Junior Community Mass for the year. This will be celebrated on Saturday, 14th May at 5.30pm. We welcome families from Pre-Kindy to Year 4 as this is also the night that our Year 4 First Communicants make their commitment to prepare for the Sacrament of Eucharist. Our junior choir will be invited to sing. We will also present our latest 'Faith in Action' Awards. These are awarded to students who make Jesus real in their actions.

NAPLAN
Some children may become anxious about the upcoming NAPLAN tests. This is natural as a lot of emphasis is placed on the tests in the media and sometimes by parents. NAPLAN is as an opportunity to help children build resilience towards test anxiety –this is just one of many more tests students will undertake during their school life.
Kind regards
