What Is A Hurricane?
A hurricane is a large storm that forms over warm ocean water with very strong winds that blow in a circular pattern around the center (eye) of the storm.
Wow Fact
The Great Galveston Hurricane of 1900 was a bad hurricane. It caused between 8000 to 12000 deaths. It hit the Texas coast south of Galveston on September 8. It was a Catagory 4 hurricane. Wow!!!
Safety Tips
Board up windows in your house;stay away from windows and move further inland if you are near the coast.
Tornado
What Is A Tornado?
A small, funnel-shaped cloud that spirals down from a severe storm cloud with winds blowing at very high speeds.
Wow Fact
The Tri - State tornado was a very severe F5 tornado. It formed on March 18,1925 at 1:00pm and survived more than 3 whole hours!!! It broke both records for path length and speed. It ripped through Reynolds County and ended all the way in Pike County, Indiana. Now that was a fierce tornado!
Safety Tips
Stay away from windows; if you can't find strong shelter, lie flat in a ditch or other low place, and don't stay in your car.
Thunderstorm
What Is A Thunderstorm?
A severe storm with lightning, thunder, heavy rains and strong winds. Hail and tornadoes may also form.
Wow Fact
Once a guy got a picture of a lightning bolt hitting the Statue of Liberty!
Safety Tips
Stay inside if possible; stay out of water, and don't go under trees.
