Mills Middle School Newsletter
February 2022
Hello Mustang Families! Semester 2 is well underway here at Mills. Our students recently completed the iReady Diagnostic 2 for Reading and Math. Please ask your student how their diagnostics went and how they scored! These diagnostics provide crucial data to our school to help us better understand our students' level of mastery within reading and mathematics.
In January, our students were successful in completing the school-wide Prompt Challenge. We successful cut our lates (when our students are late to class) in HALF! Our goal was to have fewer than 800 lates and we were successful with 763 lates. Our students earned an extended Free Flex Friday to participate in fun activities!
We will continue to focus our PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Supports) on our school-wide positive behaviors, also known as our Mustang Pride 5 P's: Polite, Positive, Productive, Prepared and Prompt! The behavior of the month for February is POLITE!
A few friendly reminders, the front office opens at 8:00am and closes at 3:30pm. Please remember to call and make an appointment with the staff member you wish to meet with so we plan accordingly. Please also call in to excuse your students absence. The absence line is: (916) 294-9045.

Merits & Merit Recovery
We will continue our Merit System in Semester 2. A friendly reminder that merits do not reset at the semester. We strongly encourage students to do Merit Recovery (at lunch or during FLEX) to make up any missing merits they may need to reach 96 or more merits. Please speak to your student about their merits, why they may be losing them and what their plan is to recover them. You can read more about our Merit system by reviewing the Student Handbook (see page 3).
We know how a new website/app for students to check their merits at any time - 5 STAR! Please encourage your student to show you how many merits they currently have. Students can log in anytime via the app or the website: https://5starstudents.com/MILLSMS/login

8th Grade Celebration Information
- Attendance: 90% Attendance (18 days of unexcused absence)
- Discipline: No expellable offenses during the current school year
- Grades: 8/12 passing semester grades (passing is any grade above an F)
Failure to meet this criteria makes a student ineligible to participate in the Celebration. The Celebration is defined as: all end-of-the-year 8th grade activities (field trips, dances, etc) and the ceremony where a student receives their certificate of middle school completion in an organized procession at the end of the year. Students who do not meet the eligibility requirements to participate in the Celebration will still advance to the 9th grade and receive their certificate unless retention is recommended by administration.
Athletics
Spring athletics are upon us. The final 2 sports for the school year are Boys Volleyball and Track and Field.

Counselor's Corner
Registration for the 2022-2023 school year has begun. Every student (new or returning) needs to have the parent/guardian enrollment completed via InfoSnap.
Current 6th and 7th grade students will be meeting with counselors in February to hear about the elective choices for next school year. Students will be asked to complete an Elective Choice Form to choose their elective. Please look out for this form to discuss the classes your student is selecting for next school year.
8th Graders students going to 9th grade met with Cordova High School counselors in January to register for classes.
