Community Work Day and Campus Pride Day - May 22
HRVHS Community Work and Campus Pride Day
Hood River Valley High School (HRVHS) is supporting our 22nd annual Community Work Day (CWD) and our 4th annual Campus Pride Day (CPD) – combined we call it our Community and Campus Pride Work Day (CCPWD) being held on Wednesday, May 22, 2019.
CWD is an opportunity for students from HRVHS to partner with local business owners or individuals for five (5) hours to do work for the business/individual. For five (5) hours of a student’s time, the business/individual pledges a $50 donation to HRVHS/CWD. All money raised by the students for CWD is donated to local non-profit organization(s).
CPD – Campus Pride Day happens on May 22nd as well and is offered for students that do not have their own transportation or just want to help clean up our school and outside areas. Students do not need a sponsor to work at the high school, but they still turn in a contract with their parent’s signature. Wendy will fill out the sponsor side.
Local non-profit organizations are presenting to our Student Government class on April 12th during 7th period at 12:05. The purpose is to familiarize the students with the organization and then vote to decide how the proceeds will be donated. Announcements of how the students voted will be announced after April 13th.
If a non-profit organization is interested in presenting, please contact Wendy Herman by April 10th at 541-387-5034 ext.1 or wendy.herman@hoodriver.k12.or.us
If you are interested in sponsoring a student(s) please contact Wendy. Thank you in advance for helping our students learn the importance of giving back to their community and school in a meaningful, positive and fun way!
Contracts will be available in the SUMMIT office starting on April 22nd and due back to Wendy in the SUMMIT office by May 20th. Students will be excused from school on May 22nd if they turn in their filled out and signed contract. All students who turn in a contract will receive a free CCPWD t-shirt.
Payment policy is as follows:
- Students work five (5) hours.
- The sponsor will pay a flat fee of $50.00 (checks are preferred and payable to HRVHS/CWD – please be sure to include the student’s name in the memo line)
- Payment should be given to the student(s) or can be mailed to HRVHS/CWD, 1220 Indian Creek Road, Hood River, OR 97031 if the individual/business prefers.
- Students are to turn their payment in to the SUMMIT Career Center located at the high school by May 31, 2019. If not turned in by May 31st, students will be contacted.
- All donations are tax deductible – HRVHS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization Federal Tax I.D. 93-6000502
Speech and Debate
Hood River Valley High School Speech and Debate took ten students to the South Oregon National Qualifier tournament held at Central Oregon Community College in Bend on March 15-16. Of the ten competitors, seven made it to the final round of competition. Junior Maggie Bertrand and sophomore Jacob Kaplan finished 4th and senior Emily Mitchell and junior Audrey Schlemmer placed 5th in Duo Interpretation. Schlemmer also place 4th in Dramatic Interpretation. Freshman Jazmin Contreras placed 5th in Program Oral Interpretation and junior Lillie Tomlinson finished 6th in Original Oratory.
Senior Sarah Wang qualified to compete at the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Dallas, TX in June. Wang will compete in International Extemporaneous speaking, an event where speakers have 30 minutes to prepare a seven minute speech about current international events.
Extended Application (EA) Volunteers for Judging
It is time for us to prepare for our 2nd semester Extended Application (EA) Presentation Night. For those of you that volunteered and were a judge last semester we thank you and hope you will be able to volunteer again this semester. For those that haven’t been able to volunteer, we hope you will this semester. Students need to complete an EA and present their project to a panel of judges to be able to graduate; we need judges for this 2nd semester presentation night. Students complete this requirement through the Pathways to Career Success, Internship, Cadet Teaching or Cooperative Work Experience classes.
Our 2nd semester EA Presentations will be on Monday, June 3, 2019 from 6:20-9:00. From 5:45-6:10 we will be offering dinner and handing out packets. At 6:00 there will be a brief meeting to answer questions in the classroom next to the foyer. Volunteers will be assigned to groups of three to a room where students will sign up for 20 minute slots to present their EA projects (10 minutes to present and 10 minutes for judges to score). Volunteers are asked to score these presentations with a set guide that is provided in your packet. The scoring process is relatively simple and does not require any special education.
We think this will be a very interesting project to participate in because you will get to see a variety of student projects and watch our students at their best! If you are interested in volunteering please call me at 541-387-5034 ext. 1 or email at wendy.herman@hoodriver.k12.or.us. Please share this email with anyone you think might want to volunteer. Thank you very much for your participation.
