Mrs. Katie Kaufman
Katie Kaufman is new to Springfield public schools and is on her second semester as the para for the cross categorical room at Harrison. She is known to many students as Ms. Katie or Gavin and Brenna's helper. She enjoys working in the cross categorical room as well as the regular classrooms. Katie grew up with an autistic brother, which sparked a passion to teach children with special needs. She grew up in Kenosha, Wisconsin and has been a loyal Packer fan since birth. Following high school Katie attended two years at Central Bible College before transitioning and then graduating from Evangel University. Katie graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Youth Ministry with a minor in Spanish. Outside of school she enjoys being a newlywed and loves learning how to cook new things.
Nurse Amy Schmitz
Hi! My name is Amy Schmitz, or Nurse Amy, as I am called by the students at David Harrison! I have had the privilege of being the school nurse at Harrison Elementary for seven amazing years. I graduated from the University of Missouri School of Nursing and worked in oncology before I found my niche as a school nurse. I worked as a school nurse in Nevada, Missouri before my career in Springfield. I really enjoy the opportunity to take care of children in the school setting.
I am married with four children. My husband and I have fun watching our kids’ activities, and also traveling together. I also love spending time with my family at the lake, the beach and hiking. I enjoy a good cup of coffee, reading, scrapbooking and trying new recipes.
It’s awesome to be a part of the Harrison Husky Pack!

What's going on in our specialty classes for December?
ART NEWS from Mr. Zimmerman
The winter holiday season is upon us. Let’s take a look at what’s going on in art this December. Kindergarten will study size relationships with snow people. Using the circle shape- students are challenged to create three different size circles to form their snow person’s body. We link literacy with the visual arts in Lois Ehlert’s book to get cool ideas of how to decorate our snow people. First graders are going to be become expert cutters with the snowflake project. They will learn how to fold paper and cut the edges in specific ways to create beautiful symmetrical artwork. This month, second graders will be seeing the Nutcracker Ballet. Therefore, we will be tying in the visual arts with the performance arts by making rolled paper nutcrackers. Third grade will learn about reflective symmetry using oil pastels. The lesson teaches the students about the layering property of the oil pastel and how to mix new colors. Finally, our fourth grade students will explore line variance and line design with zentangles.
PE NEWS from Mrs. Brummel
During the month of December the Physical Education classes will continue to participate in a body and spatial awareness unit. This unit includes several activities with scooters and a variety of throwing instruments. I’m sure you have heard your student talk about “Battleship,” and the “Trashcan Game, “which are a part of this unit. Towards the conclusion of December/beginning of January we will begin our BASKETBALL unit of study. We are very excited to celebrate the holiday season and have some festive games we will be enjoying closer to the Winter Break.
3rd-4th graders now have access to the Physical Education Canvas Page. I have posted Fitnessgram testing scores as well as several resources for our Harrison Huskies. I encourage you to browse that page with your student sometime this week. K-2nd page is currently under construction and will hopefully be up and running after Christmas break J
Nutrition and health is another topic that is been explored in P.E. this month. These two concepts are very important to me and I hope to help each child learn about the food pyramid, activity levels, and the benefits of a healthy diet and exercise plan.
Winter is here and I would just like to remind you that even if the weather is snowy and wet and you send your child in boots to school- please do not forget to bring tennis shoes on P.E. days.
