The Sneek Peek
Oct.2nd, 2016
Looking forward to a wonderful week!
Class Curriculum
Reader's Workshop
First Grade - We are focusing on the comprehension strategy of rereading, creating a 'movie in our mind', and asking questions as we read.
Second Grade - We are beginning a new unit studying 'Characters in Text'. We will be spending this week focusing on how character respond to major events in the story and what that tells us about that character!
Writer's Workshop
First Grade - We are studying craft moves from different authors including varied types of sentences, the use of ellipses and creating voice.
Second Grade- We are studying the revision process and will be publishing our first Small moments books next week!
Math Workshop-
First Grade - This week we are focused on using different resources we can use to develop fluency with skip counting.
Second Grade - We noticed last week that the kiddos need a little more practice with subtracting when working with larger numbers. (1-999) We will exploring how different mathematical resources can support us in becoming more fluent with subtraction.
Science-
First Grade - We have begun our unit on Earth Science. We are studying the rotation of the Earth and how it revolves around the Sun. This week we will focus on the effects of the rotation of the Earth and a brief study on 'What makes day and night?". Children will be introduced to a brief history of sun dials and create their own out of leggos. We will observe our sun dial throughout the day and record the changes. In addition we will be studying the phases of the moon.
Second Grade - We have been studying weather and how the sun is source of light, heat, and energy for the Earth. We have discussed tools that meteorologist use. Children created their own anemometer to measure the wind. Each day children have been recording the weather in order to predict the weather for next week.
Children will be participating in their first science PBL (project based learning) activity. They will use the data they created this week to forecast the weather. Children will work in groups of 3. They have selected one of the following roles they would like to fulfill in their group: meteorologist, news caster, or videographer. Children will have access to the ipad and a green screen to complete this project! This should be a ton of fun. I will share the videos with you!

Patterson's Farm
Wednesday, Oct. 5th
Forecast: Partly Cloudy - 74 degrees
Please dress your child appropriately for the weather and the muck. Understand, we will be on a farm ... your child will probably get dirty! Tennis shoes are preferred. It may not be a bad idea to have an extra pair of clothing in your child's backpack, including socks. That way they can change if they get too wet or muddy (depending on weather).
Does your child have allergies? We will be around farm animals, straw, and hay. I am unable to give any medication but they may benefit from taking something before hand.
Lunch - if you indicated that your child would bring their lunch from home please have it packed in a disposable sack labeled with their name and mine. It is easiest if we do not have thermoses or water bottles to keep up with.

Donations Needed
Oreos (original) - First graders will be using oreos to show the phases of the moon.
Plastic Jar - All children need to bring in a plastic jar. Mayonnaise jars work well. We have been reading the BFG, first we studied the way the Roald Dahl creates a mood in writing and have continued reading the text during read aloud. In this story the main character Sophie meets a Big Friendly Giant. As she enters his cave for the first time she notices mystical jars lining the walls of the cave. These are the jars that the BFG uses to collect and store dreams.
I would like to add supplies to Makers Space so children may create their own dream jars!
Glitter Glue - for the dream jars
