Lincoln, Logan, & McPherson Co. 4-H
April #1
A Note from Miss Caitlyn
Dear Lincoln, Logan & McPherson County 4-H Families,
A big congratulations to two of our volunteers Chase Prentice and Nancy Lashley! Chase is one of eleven individuals receiving the Emerging Adult Volunteer award. Nancy is receiving the Outstanding Adult Volunteer award. Both of these recipients are very deserving of this recognition. Please help me congratulate them! :)
I encourage you to check out our summer workshops. This is a great way to complete a project that can be entered at fair with 4-H friends.
A friendly reminder that TODAY is the deadline to enter the Performing arts contest on April 30th. Communication skills are essential to many careers that might interest you. I would strongly encourage you to consider participating. If speech isn't your thing, maybe a PSA or video communication is. There are many options and I know you can find a spot that fits you.
Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns,
Miss Caitlyn
Governor's Agricultural Excellence Awards 2023
We encourage your clubs to consider applying for a grant to assist with completing a project that will have a lasting impact on your community and/or program. The application form is linked on the Nebraska 4-H Foundation website: https://www.ne4hfoundation.org/governers-ag-excellence-award/. They will accept applications through April 21st, 2023.
The Governor’s Agricultural Excellence Awards are sponsored by Nebraska Investment Finance Authority (NIFA). We encourage all clubs to consider a project that will impact their community and promote Nebraska 4-H.
Please note the requirements for the grant:
- Projects should fit within one of the seven programming areas of Nebraska 4-H
- Highly encourage community engagement and educational components
- Clubs need to consider the impact of their project and how they will assess the impact
- Clubs should consider at least one additional outside partner to help complete their project.
- A written letter of support from a 4-H professional in their county will need to accompany the application.
- Clubs who have received the award in the past and not submitted a summary report at the conclusion of their project will not be considered for future awards.
Clubs should submit their application and all materials to Lindsay Shearer (lshearer2@unl.edu) via email on or before April 21, 2023.

Heirloom Treasures/Family Keepsakes
C256-001 - Trunks- Including doll-sized trunks or wardrobes.
C256-002 - An Article- Either a repurposed "treasure" (accessory) from an old item or an old "treasure" (accessory) refinished or renovated, may include a display of a collection or collectibles, being careful not to destroy value of the collection.
C256-003 - Furniture- Either a repurposed "treasure" from an old item or an old "treasure" refinished or renovated. May include doll-sized furniture.
C256-004 - Cleaned and Restored Heirloom Accessory or Furniture- A reconditioned and cleaned old piece of furniture or accessory that is functional for use or display. Item might be cleaned and waxed, and simple repairs made. Item would not be refinished or repainted, but reconditioned to restore it to its original look or to prevent it from further damage as a valuable heirloom. Consult extension publication Care and Conservation of Heirloom Textiles for information on textiles. This publication can be found in the Digital Commons at: https://go.unl.edu/gcnh (Refinished items go in classes 2 – 3.) This class is for situations where it may be best to do very little to the item to maintain its antique value. Item or article should be of complexity suited to an advanced project.
Rules
1. This project area is for items with historic, sentimental or antique value that are restored, repurposed or refinished to keep their original look and value. It is not for “recycled” items. For example, a bench would be considered an heirloom if the original finish is restored, but if decorated by painting it would be considered recycled.
2. Entering highly valuable items (especially small ones) is discouraged, as exhibits are not displayed in closed cases.
3. NOTE: Resources to support this project area are available on the 4-H website.
4. Attach information including:
- List of steps taken to complete your project. Before and after pictures are encouraged.
- Keepsakes documentation: how you acquired the item and the history of the item may be written, pictures, audio or video tape of interview with family member, etc.
