#AOENEWS: This Must Stop!
TikTok Seizure Challenge - It's A Discrimination
Over the past few weeks, there has been a lot of controversy over a particular challenge on Tik Tok.
The rapper, Jared Anthony Higgins known as "Juice Wrld", recently passed away in December from a seizure, has a song called "Lucid Dreams". There are many using and mimicking a seizure for this Tik Tok challenge. These videos have people dancing along to this song, then when the words, "Lucid Dreams" appear, they begin to shake and some even fall as if they are having a seizure or episode.
There are many celebrities living with epilepsy and some have passed away due to issues related to seizures. Disney star, Cameron Boyce, recently passed away due to a seizure while asleep. This is also known as SUDEP - Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy.
Many are asking, "WHY?"
Our charity and advocacy has received calls, emails, and messages on our social media about this nonsense and discrimination against those in the epilepsy community. Yes, this is discrimination. Many epilepsy survivors are discriminated and judged due to having seizures and how others look at them differently.
Understand, there are many children and teens dealing with depression related to epilepsy as well as being judged from it. Some no longer have friends, and even bullied at school or in public related to this condition.
Many of us feel that Tik Tok has gone too far to allow ANY discrimination, whether it's related to race, gender, or any disability, to be displayed on their site and to the public.
Tik Tok needs to set rules and guidelines related to videos on their site, especially related to discrimination toward any illnesses or disabilities.
From Some Of Our Social Media Followers
There are many epilepsy survivors and advocates speaking out about this matter. Yes, many living with epilepsy are judged, but it will not stop some of us to speak and share our stories. Many out there do not know about this severe brain disorder until they have been diagnosed or someone close to them.
One of our goals is to inform many people about it and even have them to share with others. That's why Angels Of Epilepsy gives as much information as we can about epilepsy and seizures.
Sign This Petition
There's a petition on change.org started by: Alana Harrity entitled, "Remove the seizure challenge from TikTok", and we need for as many to sign this.
Signing this petition can possibly make a change to the many lives that matter in the epilepsy community.
