Gale Databases and Google Drive
How to Take Notes in The Gale Database using Google Drive!
Gale and Google
Gale and Google have combined to make note taking easier for students. Although not all of the Gale databases currently have this capability, all Gale databases will eventually have this feature. Note taking in the Gale databases allows students to send articles that they have taken notes on directly to their Google Drive. The benefits of Google Drive is that the storage capabilities are unlimited and students can review their notes anywhere they have WiFi or if they have a data plan. So here is howto do it:
**Please note that you cannot get to the databases from these images....these are simply a list of the databases that have Google capabilities.
Step 1: Signing into Google From the Database
When students open any of the following databases, they will have an option at the top of the page to sign in. Students should click on sign in and select sign in with Google.
Step 2: Signing into their Google account
If students are using a computer at school or on a Chromebook, they will just have to click allow. If they are at home they will be asked to enter theirstudent Google account. That would be their studentnumber@pdsb.net and their regular password that they use to log into the student computers.
Step 3: Searching for the Article
Now students can begin the search for the article of their choice. They should enter the key word(s) of the topic they are looking for and find an article. Once they have selected one that they feel will work for them, they can move on to Step 4.
Step 4: Note Taking in the Gale Databases
As students find quotes and other parts of the article that they want to use for their research, the should highlight them. As students select material and highlight it, they will have the option of changing the colours of the sections that they highlighted. This is useful as it can help them organize similar ideas and perspectives. They can also take notes by clicking on the note taking icon, located beside the highlight icon. Students need to be sure to click save after they have taken the notes so that they are not lost. The YouTube video below will help explain how to email the notes to an email account.

Step 5: Sending your Article to your Google Drive
Once you have completed all of your highlighting and note taking, you can send those notes directly to your Google Drive. All you have to do is click on download (it will be found in the list at the top right side of the page) and select save to Google Drive. Students can also download the article in PDF or HTML format if they want to view the document immediately. The notes and highlighted sections will be at the bottom of the document. Once they click save to Google Drive, the will need to go to www.googledrive.com and log into their Google account using their studentnumber@pdsb.net and their password. Their article will be saved to a file folder that will have the title of the database they just searched. All they have to do is open the folder, select the article they were working on, and their highlighted information and notes will be located at the bottom of the article, along with the correct citation in MLA 8th edition format! If they need the citation in another format, they can go back to the original article and export the citation they need directly to their Google Drive.
