Week 2: Cyberbullying
A Note from the School Counselors (Mrs. W-Y & Mrs. Ventura)
Although it might seem early to think about our CES students and online bullying, it’s best to take precautions and have honest and open conversations about internet use early. This week, we thought we would share some information that Common Sense Media has around the topic of Cyberbullying.
“Once kids go online, their chances of finding cyberbullies, haters, and trolls is, sadly, quite high. Find age-specific guidelines, videos, and articles to help with tough conversations -- whether your kid is a bully or is being bullied. We answer all your cyberbullying questions, offering age-appropriate advice, school resources, and more from parents and experts.”
Check out the link below for the answers to some common parent questions around cyberbullying, such as:
“What should I teach my kid about online safety?”
“When should parents intervene in a cyberbullying situation?”
“How do I report cyberbullying?”
“What can I tell my kid if he/she is being cyberbullied?”

Introducing Community Living and Learning
The Garnet Valley Special Education Department has established a Community Living and Learning program to support the development of students with special learning needs at the high school level. We have leased an apartment to provide an authentic learning environment for the students to acquire independent living skills, work skills, and life skills.
We are seeking donations from our Garnet Valley community to support and sustain the program. This support would include:
- Gift Cards to local grocery stores and department stores (Home Depot, Staples, Home Goods, Best Buy)
- Purchasing items at our Target Registry (Listed as Garnet Valley CLL Apartment)
- Direct cash donations through My School Bucks Click Here to Donate
Any donation size would be appreciated!!
We are also seeking a special donation of a transportation van to support our needs for work schedules and grocery runs.
For businesses who wish to donate $500, the company name will be listed on the district website. For donations of $1,000, the company name and logo or link to website will be listed.
Donations are Tax Deductible, and will be accepted at Garnet Valley School District, Attn: Community Living & Learning, 80 Station Road, Glen Mills, PA 19342

Garnet Valley CTC Quick Tip #37 Healthy Risk Taking?
Did you know? “In teen brains, the “GO” light tends to shine bright, but “CAUTION” and “STOP” aren’t completely wired yet. Many times teens give in to temptation by believing that nothing bad can ever happen to them, which is why teens may be more likely to take risks. By guiding your teen toward healthy challenges, you can help steer [them] clear of taking negative risks and help strengthen [their] brain at the same time.” (Partnership for Drug Free Kids)
Call to action… Try to find out what healthy risks appeal to your child.
- What makes them the happiest?
- What’s the most valuable thing in the world to them?
- What’s the most exciting thing they’ve ever done or can imagine doing?
“If [your teen] is hesitant to try something new, talk about your own healthy risk-taking – and your failures – with them. Be sure to model the behavior you want to see in your teen, too, so they have an example set for them (whether [they] realize it or not, [they are] emulating you).” (Partnership for Drug Free Kids)
