Welcome Back

We are off to a great start to the 2017-2018 school year! We are excited for the wonderful things ahead of us, and we are honored to work with you and your child(ren) each day.

We have spent the first two weeks setting students up for success for the rest of the year. We have been teaching and learning all about expectations, building strong relationships between students and teachers, and creating a family/team like culture in each classroom. Below, you will see our Panther Principles matrix, an outline of school-wide expectations. This might look familiar from last year, but there are some changes as a team of staff members worked hard to revise our matrix over the summer. You also might remember our ticket system last year, where students earned tickets for doing the right thing. We have continued that into this year, and our students have been recognized for making good choices 9,392 times so far!!!!! This year, they can use those tickets for a variety of things, one being the school store. The kids visited the store on Friday for the first time, and it was a HUGE success. Now, this is where it gets even more interesting. Once your child spends their tickets, they turn into house points. Have you been hearing your child talk about being in the House of Bujari (green) , Midnimo (blue), Scoperta (purple), or Ujasiri (red)? That's because all of our students and all of our staff members have been sorted into four houses that stand for specific character traits. Bujari is the House of Generosity, "From My Heart to Yours". Midnimo is the House of Unity, "Unity through Diversity". Scoperta is the House of Discovery, "To Infinity and Beyond". Ujasiri is the House of Courage, "Courage doesn't mean you don't get afraid. Courage means you don't let fear stop you." This house system gives us the opportunity to build a sense of community and learn all sorts of lessons about building each other up, while also including some healthy competition. The house with the most points each 9-weeks will have a big reward. The house that wins the competition for the year will win the grand prize trophy. We are going to have a lot of fun with these houses and hope you will join us in encouraging students to earn and spend tickets. We may have four houses at Pond Gap Elementary, but we are all one big family! #4houses1family

We believe that the school, families, and community are one big team working for our students to believe, achieve, and succeed. Never hesitate to contact your child's teacher or the school with questions or concerns. Go forth and be awesome!

Big picture

CONSTRUCTION Update

Our construction has been ongoing since the beginning of last summer and much progress has been made. Last December, we opened the new wing of classrooms which allowed us to have all of our classrooms inside the main building and remove all of our portable classrooms. Although excessive rain and other unexpected Phase two of the construction project (see picture below) is getting closer and closer to completion. We are hoping to be able to use the new part of the building by the middle to end of October. When that happens, our entire address will move from Hollywood to Papermill. The main parking lot that we use now will turn into a field (with future dreams of trying to build another playground). The new parking lot will be at the far end of the construction off of Papermill. The good news is we will have separate car and bus lines! This will help with traffic. Be on the lookout for more information about this transition.

This summer all of our walls were painted gray. We chose gray because our school colors are maroon and gray. We have lots of plans for the walls and how we will decorate them to improve our culture of excellence. Please be patient with our blank walls for a while longer.

As you can see from the floor plan below, we will have a new media center/library when we open the new part of the building. The old library was transformed into two classrooms over the summer. While Ms. Broyles is able to have classes in one of those rooms, students will not be able to check out books from the library until we move. We will also have a new office/administrative area, gymnasium, music room, art room and patio, among other things. We are also the ONLY school in KCS with an ActivPanel in EVERY classroom. This is basically like having a huge tablet on the wall.
