Afterschool Lego Clubs

In 2022 Mahnomen County 4-H received a Helping Hands grant to start Lego clubs at area schools. The clubs meet 6 times for 90 mins each, working through a 4-H Lego curriculum. The Lego supplies were purchased in the fall and clubs started in October at Mahnomen Elementary led by Gerri Swiers and Hardy DeLong. When Rebekah returned from maternity leave she picked up the programming in the Ogema & Waubun schools.

Here's what some of the kids who have participated had to say about their experience:

  • They had fun building with Lego with their friends, and making new friends at the club.
  • When asked if they would like to have another session, all the kids said "Yes!"
  • Favorite challenge? Building a Lego town, playing Memory, and the deserted island challenges.

The Lego clubs have been a huge success with every club filling up fast, and kids being on waiting lists for the next round. By the end of February there will have been a total of 6

rounds of sessions at 3 schools. That's over 3000 minutes of STEM based Lego play. The leaders plan to extend this programming into the Spring/Summer months using a different curriculum. Watch the newsletters for more information.
