California state law, the California Healthy Youth Act, requires that comprehensive sexual health and HIV prevention education be provided to students at least once in middle school and once in high school. A school district may also provide comprehensive sexual health or HIV prevention education earlier than grade 7 consisting of age-appropriate instruction and medically accurate information on any of the general topics. In keeping with these requirements and guidelines, San Diego Unified School District offers comprehensive sexual health education in grades 6, 8, and high school. the California Healthy Youth Act, corresponding CA Education Code, and other instructional resources can be found on the Sexual Health Education Program’s website:

Instruction will be given the week of May 24 during science classes.

Please note that parents/guardians may excuse their child from the sexual health instruction for this school year by providing an electronic or written note in their preferred language to their child's teacher. The note should simply state that they are excusing their child from the instruction, include their child's name, and be generated or signed by the parent or guardian. There is no need for any reason to be stated in this note.

thank you ptsa for the great staff appreciation event

To all of those who donated and support WMS Teachers,

My name is Christi Berg and this is my second year teaching at Wangenheim, but my 17th year in my SDUSD career. In all my years in education, never have I felt so appreciated for Teacher Appreciation week as I did last Thursday (the 13th). The amount of time, donations and thought that went into making this day so special, created such an overwhelming sense of joy, excitement and gratitude.

The Easter Egg Hunt and Basket Auction made me feel that our parents, staff and community understand how especially hard teaching has been this year and that we were worthy of an event like this. I have planned many events in my career, so I know how much time, effort and support it took to make something like this happen. I also know everyone is tired and we all want life in general to go back to normal, so it means so much more knowing that it was this important for you all to go above and beyond to make such a kind and meaningful event that shows us just how much we mean to you.

Since day one of joining this school, I knew it was the right place for me. This year has been hard for countless reasons, but not one of them have been the admin team, my colleagues, student or our school community. So grateful to be at Wangenheim. Even though I did not win a basket, it feels like I have won the professional lottery in life.

Thank you does not seem like even, my words do not do the way this event made me feel justice, but THANK YOU so very much.

Take care of yourselves,

Christi Berg

Fresh Fruit Strudel

Strawberry picking is reaching the peak of the season. With so many fresh berries available, it is time to make a fruit strudel. This one is very close to the one you get at Hans and Harry without the drive.
