Hawlemont News
12/15/23
From the principal
This week students were overheard decoding open syllables, observing math patterns, recording the weather and considering appropriate attire, LOVING "that book", advocating for respectful fort use, and writing incredible revised scenes. Despite big feelings about the upcoming break, students (and staff) are doing a great job doing the important work of learners and community members.
We are closing in on the end of December. The attendance trophy and prizes are still up for grabs. Which class will take the glory?!
At our next all-school, December 20th 2:00-3:00, we will collect grit stones. I anticipate Hawlemont students earning the next reward. We will celebrate our GRITness with Pajamas and Popcorn on Dec 22nd! If your family has a favorite popcorn topper, consider sending some in to share with the class. Remember this is a 12:30 dismissal with no after school care.
Take care,
Amber Tulloch

4H news
The Hawlemont 4H Clubs are organizing a food drive for Charlemont Good Neighbors as part of their Community Service Project. All 4H students in grades 3rd-6th met with Jenn Sinistore during their lunch this past Wed., and came up with a plan for this project.
There are 3 baskets spread throughout the school where students and community members can drop off donated items.
Canned and boxed items are great, but Good Neighbors gave a list of items that are really needed. The 4H students went over this list and helped edit it during our lunch together.
On December 19th, the Hawlemont 4H students will walk to the Federated Church during school hours to deliver and help organize the items they collected.

The stomach virus has hit Hawlemont along with everything else!
What people refer to as the “stomach virus or stomach flu” is not actually related to influenza at all. Although, sometimes vomiting and diarrhea do accompany the symptoms of influenza.
The medical term for the stomach virus is vial gastroenteritis - inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract caused by a viral infection. Common contagious stomach viral infections are the Rotavirus Virus (more common in children) and the Norovirus (more common in adults).
Symptoms:
Symptoms of the stomach virus include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Symptoms start sometime within a few days after exposure and normally stop within a few days but can last up to two weeks.
School policy:
Learners need to remain out of school for at least 12 hours after their last episode of diarrhea or vomiting.
How to prevent getting and spreading the virus:
Frequent handwashing with soap and water and decontamination of frequently touched surfaces will greatly decrease the chance of getting or spreading the virus.
How it is diagnosed:
This virus can be diagnosed by a physician based on their physical exam and the symptoms reported.
How to treat it:
Most people won’t need medical care for viral gastritis. Recovery can normally, safely occur at home. Ensure to drink enough clear fluids (small sips at a time) and get lots of rest. It is important to drink at least a ½ cup of fluid per every episode of vomiting or diarrhea. When vomiting and diarrhea finally stop, try to slowly introduce the BRAT Diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast). These foods are bland and are less likely to come back out. With excessive vomiting and diarrhea, the doctor may recommend Pedialyte for a child or Gatorade for an adult to make up for lost electrolytes. Fever can be reduced with medication or cold cloths to the back of the neck, arm pits, and groin area.
What an emergency situation looks like:
Dehydration (signs: feeling thirsty, decreased, or dark, strong-smelling urine, feeling dizzy or lightheaded, lethargic, dry mouth, sunken eyes) is common with the stomach virus. If you become dehydrated, you can’t keep any fluids down; vomiting, diarrhea or stomach pain persists past a few days or becomes severe; or your temperature is not reduced with fever reducing medications then contact your doctor or go to urgent care or the ER.

Nature's Classroom Fundraisers
Coin Wars, Students vs Staff
We have started our first fundraiser for current 4th & 5th grade students.
In the lobby of the school you will find Coin War jugs. Paper money will have positive points while coins have negative points. If you have any extra change hanging around your house, please send it in and add it to the appropriate jug.
Calendar Fundraiser
Fourth and Fifth grade will be organizing a Calendar Fundraiser. During the month of December students will be selling January calendars with prizes to be raffled off each day (31 days). Each calendar will cost $5.00 and all proceeds will go towards their Nature's Classroom trip.
We need each 4th & 5th grade family's help. We are looking for new items that can be used for prizes. Each calendar day should have a value around $20. If you don’t have any items at home that can be donated, then please go to a local business and ask them for a donation. This is a great opportunity for them to advertise on our calendar. We need these items no later than November 22nd so I have time to put the calendar together. Calendars may be sold at the 4th/5th grade bake sale at the Hobby Horse and by all 4th and 5th Grade students.
