Grand Forks Public Schools, through the Grand Forks Foundation for Education, will participate in Giving Hearts Day on February 14.
Giving Hearts Day is a 24-hour online fundraiser for non-profit charities and causes in North Dakota and northwest Minnesota. The event is hosted by the Dakota Medical Foundation, the Impact Foundation, and the Alex Stern Foundation.
Grand Forks Public Schools is raising funds to purchase a large transit vehicle to transport homeless, foster care, and at-risk students to and from school, as well as providing bus tickets to support our students and families experiencing financial distress.
“While many of us have difficulty imagining the struggles getting to school, for some of our students, it is a real and significant barrier,” said Jennifer Modeen, social worker, and McKinney-Vento and foster care liaison at Grand Forks Public Schools. “The Foundation and its partners give our community a wonderful opportunity to empower our young people through their support. Their financial support secures our students a place on the transit vehicle or bus, a seat in the classroom, an ultimately as they continue to grow and develop as young people, a seat at our community table.”
All gifts $10 or greater may be matched up with funding from generous sponsors including Grand Forks Scheels, the Myra Foundation, the Satrom Family, and Xcel Energy.
“We know that education is a key factor in breaking the poverty cycle. We have wonderful educators, and we need to ensure ALL students have a seat in their classrooms,” said Emilia Hodgson, Executive Director of the Grand Forks Foundation for Education. “Changing lives means creating an opportunity for young people to access education that will move them from their current situation to a situation that they can dream and believe is possible. We cannot do this unless they are in school. Our young people will not disappoint us if we invest and believe in their capacity to live their lives to the fullest potential.”
