Young Children and Big World Events
Many of us are trying to navigate the recent national events ourselves; however, talking to children makes it even more difficult. Here is an article that I shared with staff recently that you can use if you'd like. I'll link it below, but here is a summary.
- Listen: Don’t dismiss students who are trying to process this. Let them express feelings, share experiences and vent. Consider journaling or drawing to react privately.
- Protect: Be aware of misinformation. Deal in facts and big ideas. Be honest, but remain calm. Keep an eye on students who have a history of trauma themselves.
- Model: Model calm and show a willingness toward positive action.
- Take care of yourself: Check in with your own feelings. Reach out to friends and colleagues if you need something as well.
January Schedule and Learning Model
In Person Learning: Students will come back to elementary schools on January 11 for in person learning. Masks, social distancing, and frequent hand-washing protocols will still be followed.
January 15 and 29: These days will be part of a true "hybrid" schedule at the elementary. According to MDE, we need to have at least 1 day of distance learning in a 5 day week for us to be considered in a hybrid model. All students K-12 will participate in distance learning on these two days. As long as numbers continue to improve, we hope to be able to move to an "in person" model which would not have any distance learning days.
Additionally, these days are used to provide additional prep time for teachers based on the Executive Order 20-94 and 20-95. Teachers will be available for help from 7:30-12:30pm on 1/15 and 1/29.
Student Devices
I will be sure to include a message in the family bulletin in the future when we would like devices returned. Thank you!

Important Message from Food Service
Please note that breakfast and lunch for January 15 and 29 will be sent home with students on the day before (1/14 and 1/28). Please look for these meals in your child's backpack on those Thursdays.
There will be no food pick up at JCE on 1/15 and 1/29.
If you have questions or do not want your child to receive a meal, please email Jodi Boganrief (boganriefj@rocori.k12.mn.us)
Food Assistance: Pandemic-Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT)
Students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals may be eligible for Pandemic-Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) to purchase food for days they are not in the school building. To be considered, households must submit an application for free or reduced-price meals for the 2020-21 school year or be approved for Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP) or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Families who received P-EBT benefits last summer are not automatically eligible; eligibility is based on the current school year. Benefits may be retroactive to September 2020, depending on when eligibility for free or reduced-price meals is determined. To ensure you qualify for the most benefits, please submit your application as soon as possible.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Students in households that meet the free or reduced price meal income guidelines will generate compensatory revenue for their school. Schools must use compensatory revenue to meet the needs of students who are behind their peers, such as remedial instruction, instructional materials including digital learning and technology, bilingual programs and additional teachers and teacher aides. These applications may also make teachers in your school eligible for the federal Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program if they have outstanding college loans. However, the household must complete and return the forms, or complete the online form, no later than December 15 so the school can calculate eligibility and report to MDE.
