Principal's Message

Oak Creek Families,

To quote the artwork above, by Lam Hoang, a 4th grader here at OCE, "When the world is dark and the clouds turn black, we can help lighten the world...together." I am very thankful for the Oak Creek community and the way people come together to support each other when times are "dark". I also appreciate the trust you place in our team to do what is best for your children, and to do all we can to ensure their safety while they are in our care. We take this role very seriously, and your support makes a difference.

I hope you are all able to take advantage of the extra time off of school and to spend some extra time with those you love this weekend!

SAVE THE DATE: Smart Start - Thursday, Aug. 25, 1-3 p.m.

Smart Start is an opportunity specifically for our students with 504s and IEPs, and their parents and guardians, to make introductions and connect with their teachers and to feel prepared and welcomed for the start of school. For the 2022-23 School Year, Smart Start is in person Aug. 25, 2022, from 1-3 p.m.

Teachers will be familiar with your student’s plan and accommodations. To help get to know your students, please complete the attached one-page profile or create one on your own ahead of time, and give it to the teacher at the Smart Start introduction.

Also, to assist in your family’s preparation for the new school year, please click here for a Smart Start checklist for parents and guardians of students with 504s and IEPs.

See you on Aug. 25!

Special Shout Out and Thank You to the SMART Reading Program.

Oak Creek Elementary School has been fortunate to continue our partnership with SMARTReading.org. This year is its 30th year. SMART is a non-profit Oregon-wide organization that pairs adult volunteers with students to provide one-on-one reading support and new books for students to keep.

SMART has been working with the Oak Creek Kindergarten students for several years. During the pandemic, SMART has provided a book delivery model to our kindergarten students with 10 new books to keep. We want to thank SMART and our volunteer coordinator, Sarah Bass. We hope to be able to welcome back in-person SMART adult volunteers in the Fall. To learn more about SMART and volunteer opportunities, visit SMARTreading.org.

Oak Creek 5th Grade Celebration: Vaccinations and Exemptions

We are looking forward to celebrating your child with you at our end-of-year 5th grade celebration. To ensure that all may participate, LOSD is making an exception for end-of-year ceremonies and accepting exemption requests for unvaccinated adults to attend their child’s ceremony.

For any adult in your family who plans to attend the ceremony and is not vaccinated for COVID-19, please submit an exemption form along with a photo of your negative test to Carrie Beach at beachc@loswego.k12.or.us by June 8. We will not be able to collect exemption forms and tests at the ceremony. Thank you!

2022-2023 Enrollment Verification

Beginning April 29, LOSD needs parents/guardians of all students enrolled for the 2022-23 school year to log into ParentVUE and review/update your students' information through the Register/Verify tab.

This benefits both families and schools by:

  • Ensuring that schools have accurate information to reach parents and other contacts in both emergency and non-emergency situations. Verification is important even if your address or contact information has not changed over the past year because the school may have incorrect information from a previous year.
  • Confirming parent email addresses for Google Classroom and other applications to participate in your student's learning.
  • Enabling distribution of key information in the district's K-12 Family Handbook.

If you have forgotten your ParentVUE password, go to the login page, click "I am a Parent," then click "Forgot Password." If you are unsure whether you have a ParentVUE account, contact your student's school. For assistance with the verification process, refer to the user guide on the LOSD website or contact your student's school.

Not Coming Back to Oak Creek?

If you are moving out of district and your students will not be attending a Lake Oswego school in the fall, please call the office at 503.534.2323 to let us know. Thank you in advance!

2022-2023 New Registrations

In order for us to be ready for school in the fall, please share with your friends and neighbors: Registration for the 2022-23 school year (all grade levels) is open online! This is for new students who have never enrolled in Lake Oswego before and for returning students who are not currently enrolled but will re-enroll for next year. Registration is online through ParentVUE. Parents do not need to register students for 2022-23 who are currently attending during the 2021- 22 school year.

Please Check Lost and Found!

State Assessment Score Reports

This summer, LOSD will deliver students’ state assessment results online through ParentVUE rather than mailing paper. This is in keeping with the district’s strategic goal of sustainability and mirrors how we deliver report cards. Your child’s assessment reports will appear on your ParentVUE Documents page in late July. As you review your student’s English Language Arts, math, and science scores, please keep in mind:

  • An achievement level of 3 or 4 is considered to be on track for the student’s grade level.
  • Scores on state assessments are only one measure of a student’s academic progress. We use these scores in conjunction with classroom work and other daily, weekly, monthly, and term assessments to understand your student’s strengths and areas for improvement.

If you have forgotten your ParentVUE password, go to the login page, click "I am a Parent," then click "Forgot Password." If you are unsure whether you have a ParentVUE account or need assistance, please contact your student’s school.

i-Ready Spring Assessment

Soon, elementary students in Lake Oswego will complete two online i-Ready assessments in class. One is for math and the other is for reading. As you know, i-Ready is a program that helps us determine your child’s strengths and areas for future growth. This is the third of three i-Ready diagnostic assessments we give each year, and the results will be shared with parents before the summer break. For kindergartners, this will be their second i-Ready assessment.

Boys/Girls Summer Basketball Camp Sign-ups Now Available

Summer basketball camps for both boys and girls are happening this summer! Sign-ups are now available through Community School! Link here: Summer Basketball Camp Sign-Ups

Volunteer Requirements

We're are excited to welcome volunteers back into our schools!! Please watch for communication from your child's teacher about when the opportunity will be available in their classroom, and check out our website for volunteer requirements.

Upcoming Health Lessons

Our teachers use the adopted Health Curriculum, The Great Body Shop, to teach the required Oregon Health Standards to our students. THE GREAT BODY SHOP is a comprehensive health education curriculum which is sequential, developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, and medically accurate. The lessons align with Oregon’s Health Education Standards and are embedded with social-emotional learning. Watch your classroom teacher's newsletter for upcoming topics. If you would like to review the health curriculum, please contact the school office. More information, including an opt-out form if needed, can be found on the District website.

Counselor Corner

Big picture

Dear Oak Creek Families,

During May, we will work together to practice the character trait of COOPERATION in our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons, classrooms, and throughout our school.

As a school community, we will be examining how Cooperation looks, sounds, and feels. Cooperation is about assistance, support, collaboration, & teamwork. It is a necessary tool in our toolbox for creating a community that cares for one another.

Students will be encouraged to use cooperation skills such as communication, self-awareness, and the ability to step up (or step back) when the time is right to best support whatever group you are working with. Using these skills will help us to work alongside one another and create things, together, that are better than anything we could create on our own.

The definition students will be learning this month is COOPERATION: working together

& helping others.

Here are links for extension activities to explore COOPERATION further as a family:
