Principal's Message
Week 2. A Day. Attendance Group 1. Tracking all of the numbers and configurations of our life in school these days keeps the neurons firing. This is always the time of year when the days and weeks go by quickly, and then there is graduation, followed by the end of the school year for 6th – 11th graders. In the meantime, we are also planning for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year, and we are hopeful for a full return to in-person learning.
ISB will be welcoming the new principal, Andrew Gilford on July 1, 2021. Andrew is currently serving as Assistant Principal at Clackamas High School in the North Clackamas School District. Before becoming an administrator, Andrew, who is fluent in Spanish, was an Instructional Coach, IB Geography Teacher, and also taught Science and Social Studies. Andrew has lived and taught in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Andrew brings an international perspective, linguistic diversity and a strong tradition of instructional leadership to the role. Andrew sounds like a wonderful fit for ISB!
ISB 6th graders, whether in-person or CDL, will be participating in a virtual Outdoor School for four days next week (week of May 3 through 7). ISB teachers will be monitoring the zooms and instruction will be provided by ODS staff from the Northwest Regional ESD. Science packets will be distributed to students—if your child is in CDL, the packets are available to be picked up at the main office. You will find more information in the article following this message.
Oregon’s request to waive the state assessments this year was denied. The District will be offering students the ability to test on Wednesdays from May 12 through June 9. Please see the article later in this newsletter for details. If you want your child to test, we ask that you submit the form (link in the article) by Friday, April 30.
Please read the article titled “Fake and Fatal” in the newsletter. The reference is to fentanyl poisoning that has taken the lives of young people in the community. We want as much information out into the community as possible to warn people of this danger.
I hope you are well. Take care.
Sincerely,
Janice Adams
6th Grade Outdoor School at Home - May 3rd-7th
We are excited to offer an Outdoor Science School Experience to all ISB 6th graders this May. Given COVID restrictions this year, it will be an at-home experience.
All 6th grade students are invited to participate in the NWRESD "Outdoor School @ Home" program during afternoons the week of May 3rd - 7th, beginning on May 3rd. This program will involve synchronous Zoom sessions with Outdoor School staff members on each day of that week, except for Wednesday, as well as asynchronous activities for students. Details and links to the Zoom sessions will be shared with families via email by the end of April.
To note, if your child is attending In-Person Hybrid, he/she will log in to the Zoom sessions from school on the days they are at school.
All 6th grade students will be receiving a backpack/kit of materials to be used with the Science Outdoor School @ Home lessons. Students attending school in person will get the bag in their science class this week. CDL students need to come pick up their materials from the main office this week from 8 am-2 pm. Call the school when you're here, let them know you need a 6th grade science backpack/kit and someone will bring a bag to your car.
Also, Outdoor Science School will be hosting an evening Campfire Program for 6th grade students on Thursday, May 6th from 7-8 pm. Students will receive the private YouTube link on their email and in the grade level canvas page on Thursday afternoon.
We look forward to sharing this Outdoor Science School experience with your child!

Fake & Fatal
BSD will be hosting a virtual “Community Conversation about Fentanyl: Fake & Fatal” on Thursday, April 29 at 7 p.m. You can participate by watching live on the district’s YouTube channel or Facebook page. We’ll be taking questions via social media. Our panelists will include representatives from the Washington County Public Health Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Department and Beaverton Police Department.
During that conversation, we’ll also be hearing from Jennifer and Jon Epstein, former Cedar Park Middle School and Sunset High School parents who lost their son, Cal, to fentanyl poisoning in December. We want to publicly thank the Epsteins for their courage and willingness to share their story with hopes of saving other children’s lives. Here’s a preview of what they’ll be discussing.
We hope you can join us.
Falso & Fatal
Reminder: Student Screening Protocol at Home
- Parents and guardians will perform a daily health evaluation before sending students to school.
- If a student is exhibiting a fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, a new loss of taste or smell or any of the symptoms on our Too Sick for School - Keep Ill Students Out of School flyer, the student should stay home.
For detailed COVID-19 Health and Safety Guidance, please visit this BSD webpage.
State Testing
Because of the pandemic, the Oregon Department of Education requested a waiver from the U.S. Department of Education that would have allowed school districts to skip state testing this spring. However, the federal government denied that request. Therefore, to maintain our federal funding, the Beaverton School District must offer testing to our students. Parents and guardians have the right to OPT OUT their students from testing.
To maximize in-person instruction time for Hybrid students and to provide testing opportunities for Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) students, we will provide testing opportunities on Wednesdays (asynchronous learning days only) in May and June. Transportation will be provided for students who live one mile (elementary) or 1.5 miles (secondary) from their school.
To help us schedule transportation and deliver a safe and successful testing experience for every student, we need to know by April 30 whether your student will or will not participate. Please complete this form.

No. The U.S. Department of Education won’t require the Oregon Department of Education to use summative test data for accountability purposes this year.

Yes. The health and safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. All safety protocols will be followed including mandatory mask wearing and social distancing.

School staff who have met training and security requirements will administer the test.
How long is each test?

My student needs transportation. When will I find out when and where my student will be picked up and dropped off?
Families will receive an email on May 10 with their students’ routes, bus stop locations and pick-up and drop-off times.
When can I expect to receive my child’s test results?
We expect individual overall student test results will be available in ParentVue in August.
Will test results be used to identify students for TAG or Summa?
