2015 Horace Mann Summer Updates
Horace Mann High School
Welcome Back!!!
We hope to share a lot of what we are hard at work this summer and things to look forward to in the fall. Parents/students please make sure we have your email so you may receive our smore newsletter updates. Please also look for registration items the first week in August if not sooner.
I am honored to be your High School Principal and just completed my tenth year here at Horace Mann. We continue to look at ways to add advanced and career courses for students as well as look at how we can support each students learning journey.
We have new staff including I will introduce later in this newsletter who are very excited to be here and who bring a wealth of knowledge with them. We've also had staff change roles in our District and will also share with you.
Students we are excited for a new year. You will again receive a chrome book to enhance/supplement your education and we will share with you ways to keep it safe and appropriate use of this and other technology. Parents we are asking everyone to pay the $25 for insurance but otherwise there is not a cost for our chrome books. Seniors will again have the opportunity to buy their chrome book at a reduced rate.
We hope you will have a good rest of your summer and we are excited to see you September 1st. Parents, please feel free to check our website as it is updated daily!
We have supplies lists, forms and tons of great information!

What does Intervention and Enrichment mean?
Students will have an opportunity for some re-teaching of core subjects including English and Math. Students who are struggling will be placed in a small group session. We will look at students grades, maps scores, wkce and other scores this summer to help place students.
Students who are doing well in test scores and in classes will have the opportunity to participate in enrichment activities. Students would sign up on a google form and such activities may include acapella choir, robotics, Spanish club, yearbook, first aid and cpr certification, and cross training.
We hope with this two day a week period to offer a variety of opportunities for our students.
Block Days-Wednesday and Thursday
Wednesday and Thursday will be our block days. Wednesday will be our odd hours and Thursday our even hours. Students as you can see will have the opportunity for longer class periods for labs, phy.ed activities such as golf, deeper class discussions and projects. We feel the modified block gives students the best of both an 8 period and block days.
Sports-Mandatory Code Meeting
A parent must attend along with the athlete.

Musical
Auditions for the musical will be held the first week of school. Students do not need to be enrolled in choir to participate. Rehearsals times will be determined but most likely after school and early evenings. If you'd like to be on stage or build a stage or behind the scenes we hope you will be a part of the musical. If you have any questions please contact Anthony Rasmussen at arasmussen@nfdlschools.org
Juniors and Seniors
Juniors also will have their individual planning conferences with either Mrs. Jenny Stahl or Mrs. Jill Goebel. This is a great future planning meeting and check in with parents and student. We ask that every junior complete a job shadow by the end of the year. Students will have the opportunity to work with Mrs. Samantha Flood to set up a job shadow.
Seniors are eligible for lunch open campus if their grades are all passing each quarter(in the fall 4th quarter is reviewed from last year). Parents if you do not wish for your student to be able to leave during lunch please let the office know.
ACT test dates
Students if you plan on taking the ACT a second time as many do, we encourage you to take the test in June as we are not sure of the timing of results if you will receive them before the registration date for April.
The ACT test in March will be given at the High School and students as always will have the chance to send their results to colleges of their choice. Students who would like to have an iep accommodation must send in accommodations through their iep teacher by November.
As we receive more information we will share with parents.
Seniors if you still need to take the ACT here are test dates.
