The Curriculum Corner: Teaching with FOCUS, Part 3
- 1a: T identifies important concepts of the discipline & their relationships to one another
- 1c: Sequencing & alignment of instructional outcomes
- 1e: Lesson & unit structure
As we move forward with our new Math & ELA curriculum, please bring it to our meetings & pre-conferences as a tool to support our dialog! How will this habit help improve your FOCUS on both short-term & long-team learning goals? How will our conversations change during co-planning when we are more in-tuned to the standards and pacing rather than the day-to-day script of a specific program? Thank you for a fantastic week & please share your thoughts/reflections via email, social media or in passing throughout the day!

News & Notes
To the Special Areas Team: My coaching block is during your block this week. If you would like to "chat & chew" about anything, let me know!
Instructional Schedules: Please submit your instructional schedules to me via email by the end of the day on Monday. Please utilize the excel template attached to the "buzz email."
Holidays & the Curriculum: To continue our conversation about curriculum...some folks have been asking about how to fit in "holiday" type activities (i.e. Columbus Day, etc.). Before we engage students in these activities, first and foremost, we must ask ourselves: Are we engaging students in something meaningful and authentic. Seeing the same Leprechaun mass produced down the hallway definitely doesn't fit this criteria...and let's be honest, there is much more to Columbus' "discovery" than what is shared in our textbooks. Any holiday activities can be fit in as part of centers, morning work or during transitions. Our curriculum and essential questions should always come first. Most importantly, our topics should mirror the essential questions. While we may talk about Martin Luther King Jr. during the holiday or during Black History Month, it is MUCH more important to "learn about the world by sharing his story" & to discuss how he "changed the world by sharing and supporting his opinion." Therefore, he (and others like him) should be included in our text selection and instruction during those trimesters! As always, if you have questions just let me know!
