What A Wonderful Pre-K
"I see trees of green
Red roses too
I see them bloom
For me and you
And I think to myself
What a wonderful world.”
Louis Armstrong
These words from "What a Wonderful World" makes me think about our wonderful Pre-K learning about colors. For color week, students engaged in lessons about each color. They watched videos and sang songs based on the color of the day. Students painted and colored crafts, discussed things in the world around us that have the color of the day and of course showed off their fashion in full color. In centers, students sorted objects based on their color.

Wellness is a Part of Our Lives
Our SEL Committee welcomes you back! This year, our committee continues to work diligently and is committed to supporting the social-emotional needs of your children as they transition back to school and navigate these challenging times. Throughout the school year, students will engage in activities to assist them in building classroom communities, identify their feelings, increase their emotional vocabulary, develop coping skills and become problem solvers. Students will have the opportunity to develop these skills through our RULER Approach. Students will become “emotion scientists” as they create their Classroom Charters, learn about the Mood Meter, Meta Moment and Blueprint.
Currently, classrooms are complete. These are the rules that students promise to abide by. Everyday students plot their feelings on the Mode Meter when they enter the building and use it throughout the day to navigate through social and emotional situations. We encourage students to find their best selves using the Meta Moment. These three anchors are essential to maintain wellness and positivity within our school.
For the month of October, our school psychologists across the district will be facilitating a series of Mental Health Workshops for our 4th and 5th grade students. Throughout the 3 lesson series, students will receive an introduction to wellness, learn about stress and stress management, self-awareness, self-esteem and coping skills. Our teachers and parents will also receive resources to conduct follow-up lessons and have conversations with the students, as needed.
We encourage you to ask your children about our SEL initiatives. The more you understand about our school culture, the more successful we will be as an educational community.

Core Instruction and Testing
Every year there is a lot of talk regarding everyday instruction and assessments. Please allow me to shed some light about the difference between solid instruction and testing. Instruction consists of many different practices to teach understanding and learning so students can grow mentally, emotionally and physically throughout the year. The purpose of testing is to:
∙ measure a student’s knowledge and overall achievement.
∙ determine a student’s mastery of specific skills.
∙ provide information to schools that can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of instructional programs.
∙ monitor the performance of schools and school districts.
Our district assesses students in various academic and social areas throughout the year. We use the Fountas and Pinnell running records, the NWEA Reading and Math Assessments, which is a nationally normed exam, and Review 360 to determine social emotional well-being. At the end of the year grades 3-6 take the State ELA and Math exams administered by the New York State Department of Education.
Clear Stream has a record of performing well on standardized tests primarily because our teachers follow a well-rounded curriculum that has areas for student enrichment as well as support. Testing serves as just one point of data regarding student performance. Student results will be one component of decision-making with regards to support services or enrichment for all students. Know that the administration, faculty and staff of Clear Stream will support student learning and assessments to foster student progress and growth.

Hispanic Heritage Month
Boys and girls it is time again for us to show how
much we admire Hispanic Heritage. You may create 1
of the following 3 assignments to participate in our
Virtual Hispanic Heritage Night:
1. Lights, Camera, Action! Students may make a video no more than 1 minute in length showcasing a talent (dancing or cooking) or interviewing a person of Latin descent. Make sure you hold your camera or phone sideways when videotaping. Videos may be edited based on the amount of time we have to present for the evening.
2.You can Draw or paint a piece of artwork representing Latin culture or a Latin country.
Make sure the picture has detail and is in color. But most of all, make sure it is your BEST WORK. Please include your name somewhere on the piece.
3. You can create a Google slide about a Latin country, or a famous Latin American person. The slideshow must be 3 slides only and you must have your name on the first slide. Make sure your slides have bullet points and pictures.
Please upload all assignments your Google Drive. You must upload your assignment by Wednesday, October 21st. Thank you.
