Mrs Fitzsimmons - Week of September 30, 2016

Math 1

Students have been working hard with solving a variety of equations. We have solved equations involving multi-steps, distributive property, variables on both sides and more than one or no solutions. Students participated in learning stations in the hallway where they determined the next station they would go to based on their answer from the previous station or problem. These stations were used to review and practice solving double sided equations. We took a quiz on Friday to assess equations and those scores will be in Blackboard by Monday. Students will have a chance to make quiz corrections next week once all students have taken the quiz. Next week we will continue building with this concept to include literal and exponential equations and use these skills to solve inequalities. Math homework is assigned every night except test days. Please remind your child to complete this each night as this practice is crucial to success. Additionally every child has weekly IXL goals to help with the week's learning. These are assigned Monday as a warmup and due Friday.

Pre-Algebra (Math 8)

Students were introduced to monomials this week. Students have been multiplying and dividing monomials and learning about how to change a negative exponent to make it positive. Next week we will have our second unit test. Students will be given a review sheet on Tuesday and we will go over it during class on Wednesday before we take our test. It is super important that students try this review practice independently so they know where they have questions and are able to ask before we test. We will also take our diagnostic test in iReady next week. This online program will help us assess and learn in which specific categories students struggle. Towards the end of the week, students will learn about scientific notation, how to use it in real world problems, and how to perform operations involving scientific notation. Since we are halfway through our first quarter, all work for the first half of the quarter must be turned in no later then Friday, October 7. Please check Blackboard and have your child turn in any missing assignments no later then this date. IXL assignments are the only assignments we will not accept for late grades since students have a week to complete their weekly IXL objectives.
